whisky for Christmas

    Hi,

I've got some good advice here in the past about buying good bottles of whisk(e)y.

I'm going to buy a bottle for Dec and I think I have it narrowed down to

    Talisker 10
    Caol Ila 12
    Ardbeg 10
    laphroaig 10
    laphroaig QC

but I'm open to other suggestions. You've probably guessed I like peaty whiskies -that's my only proviso.
Last christmas I bought a Bowmore 12, which I loved, but I'd like to try something different.

€60 would be the max I could afford.

    thanks

Any of those would be a good choice, I have them all bar the Caol Ila, that's still on the shopping list!

The QC and the Talisker are often on special at some of the offies. Try The Drink Stores website, I got the Talisker on special in O'Briens about a year ago.

Bowmore is a stand-out distillery in my opinion, their cask strength offering is well worth seeking out.

On the topic of quarter casks, Ardmore is a very pleasant surprise too.

I've Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10 at home, both are very good. I slightly prefer the Laphroaig, because it was my first foray into whisky, so holds a special place.

    I also like Caol Ila.

Connemara Turf Mór is a lovely Irish with, as the name suggests, big peat flavours.

Personally I'd go with the Laphroaig QC.
Only tasted the talisker and caol ila once and thought they were OK.
Ardbeg is nice, but very smoky - if you like big peat, give it a go.

Ardbeg Uigeadail is €80 in the celtick whiskey shop. Have seen it for €60 online, dunno if you'd have to stump up duty on top of that, but it's a lovely one too.

If you are into Peated Whiskeys I'd add Connemara cask strength to that list. It is my favourite peated at the moment. I'd also recommend Laphroaig 10, Laphroaig 18 and of course Bowmore (I currently am finishing a bottle of Legend).

    They are all cracking whiskies.
I'd like to add to the Connemara recommendations.
I like all their range depending on how much you want to pay.
I used to firmly believe that you got more whisky for you money with Scotch over Irish - I've been converted.
