Reducing g/km value

    Hi, was hoping to see if its possible to reduce the overall g/km on my car. Currently as 199 on the tax form so getting hit highly. Is it possible to reduce the value somehow and get it certified for the tax office ? Would need to get below 190 to enter the low tax band. Cheers.

    Take out heavy objects. E.g. the engine.

    surely shouldnt be, if you bore out an engine from 2 to 2.2 litre you could bet theyd want extra tax money from you , so why shouldnt it apply if you reduce co2

    It's based on the manufacturers figures from the factory, so I don't see why they would allow any changes to it. Sure there are discrepencies right off the bat for most emissions compared to the manufacturers stated output. It's just like MPG figures unfortunately.

    I think it's based on the manufacturers figure of the engine, modifying an engine itself to try tamper with emissions won't count?

    but modifying an engines displacement , you are supposed to declare on your log book. that was my point.

    Nothing quite like smelling freshly burned petrol straight from your exhaust, just like a nice 70's/80's V8 upwards. :D

    Not necessarily - if you're on the emissions tax based system, then it could technically go up. Smaller engine in a big car has to work harder = more juice = more emissions.

    Engine size is more related to cc-based tax, which you don't have.

    I think they would be not willing to do this, but do it anyway then keep appealing, take them to court and maybe you win it for all of us.

    Don't they measure C02 output as part of NCT? That might be a basis for reassessing your band (Although it's probably going to be worse than the emissions from the car when it comes factory, so that mightn't work out so well ;))

    Why do people want to add layers to an already ridiculous system ?

    Can you imaging how much it would cost for them to take emissions every NCT and base your tax band around that ? Sure they would increase rates again just to pay for the admin.

    Plain silly. OP can i have your 199 Euro tax bill ? sounds yummy.

    CO2 rating is based on the vehicle's type approval figures. There's a specific test in the homologation rules for CO2 emissions and that's the rating that's applied. Technically, it may be possible to have the vehicle modified to lower emissions and then put it through Individual Vehicle Approval through the NSAI. Their IVA page is http://www.nsai.ie/Our-Services/Certification/Automotive-Certification/Type-Approval/IVA---Individual-Vehicle-Approval.aspx It's not cheap IIRC, something like €400-500. And at the end of all that the Tax Office may still tell you bugger off and tax it the same as before.

    From a Vehicle Registration Tax point of view, the Certificate of Conformity states that the vehicle at the date of manufacture has a specific level of CO2 emissions. This is the level that will be used for taxation purposes and will not change regardless of post-production modifications that might be made, modifications that might either increase or decrease the levels of emissions of the vehicle.

    However Revenue is not always right. I think they cannot be right in that case. I just cannot accept implications. Buy 520d, make transplant from M5, drive large petrol for 200E per year. This would pay off transplant in just few years.
