    Confirmed yes,

Did we know all about it, yes.

He said it is to help float the buying market over the whole year and not just in the first few months when in fact nobody will want a 132. They will all want a 131.

    It won't be that.

2012 imports haven't had the 120xxx plates and won't for 2013 or onwards.

Exactly why complicate things, The current system has only been with us since 1987 and then they go and meddle over a poxy so-called unlucky number..The changeover will somehow or another cost money to implement.

It really is the Irish way and another reminder of how idiocy rules over efficiency here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,226 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

I see that making exactly no difference, as long as we have the year as the prefix the majority of people will chase the January reg.

June may be busier, but only at the expense of a very quiet March/April/May as people hold off.

Carbon tax on solid fuels has gone up. Petrol & Diesel are not solid in normal form.

I still dont get this number plate thing. How exactly does splitting the year into two halves benefit anyone? Surely knowing this country itll just mean that everyone will wait until July to buy a car as itll be have the "newer" xx2 plate? All it really serves to do is make a new car "new" for half the time as it was this year and previous.

    Carbon Tax

I propose to increase the Carbon Tax on fossil fuels introduced in Budget 2010 from the equivalent of €15 per tonne to €20 per tonne. The increase will be applied to petrol and auto-diesel from midnight tonight. However, in view of the impact this increase will have on home heating costs over the winter months, the increase on other fuels will not take effect until May 2012. This increase is half of that proposed in the previous Government’s Four Year Plan for Budget 2012.

    From here

That ll be 3 cents more as from tonight then i guess.

helping cash flow for dealers is about the only advantage I see... It also kind of muddys the water, technically a car wont be a full year old if registered in second half, it will now go up per half (so some people who considered waiting until January may now buy in the same year)...

Its all just a pile of p1ss.

People are struggling to survive and they're spending money and messing around with number plates when they're absolutely grand the way they are..

Ah jeasus this is actually embarrassing. There is noting wrong with the current system in fact i think its a good system. Nobody is going to want a 131 car now because in 6 months there will be a shiner 132 plate. Garages need to offer incentives to buy later in the year if they want to stop the spike in January.

It'll just be 211/212. Take the last 2 digits of the year & add 1 or 2 on the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,069 ✭✭✭✭CiniO

Will this apply to imports as well?
F.e if I import a car from April 2007, will it get 07 or 071 plate?

Is the rumour I heard true that the current ANPR, Garda Pulse and motor tax online systems can only cope with xxD rather than the new 3 digit pre county letters?

I'm sure a software update will fix that if there is indeed an issue.

There was an article in the paper with some guy from an IT company looking to put in a fix for Jan about this. He's was fairly confident that it'll be successful.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous that this us being done. Purely for the car industry!!!! I would not care less if that I had a 13 - D - **** car. It's a complete joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 814 ✭✭✭JerCotter7

Why stop at 1 and 2? Just make it go to 12 and put a new one every month. This won't help the car industry. It will just split the same market into two halves rather than one whole.

Car sales are low due to people loosing jobs and car prices are too much, a poxy number plate won't make one bit of difference.

gotten agree... I'm less inclined to buy a car with a reg plate as such

Typical. Another thing that the rest of europe can use to deride and laugh at ireland for. Look at the big thick paddies, they are so backwards and superstitious they won't put "13" on their cars.

a bloody embarrasment. No wonder the British wanted rid of us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭AugustusMinimus

This change seems bedded in the fear that no one will buy a 13 reg.

Is that what this country has come to. A fear of a number ? Are people actually that ****ing stupid

In the Tour de France, the rider that gets number 13 pins it on his jersey upsidedown - so i suggest attaching your '13 plates upside, would also reduce the number speeding tickets you get - ;)

So every year car sales slow down from October to the end of the year 'cause people wait until the new year for the new reg.
And what they've done now is create a second black spot from May to June while people wait for the new reg in July!

Will probably get banned if I type what I think!

The Irish system is unusual in so far as the year change on the plat does create a glut of car sales in January and nothing for the rest of the year because the plate on the car effects the resale value.

I can't really see the addition of an extra digit changing much though. I mean, people will still see a car that's 132-C-XXXX as being from "2013". Mostly they don't give a hoot whether it's registered in January or December, as long as it has that shiny new year on it.

141-C-XXXX will be more saught after than 132-C-XXX

All you're going to do is get people even more fixated on the car's exact age now and reduce resale values even more rapidly!

Those selling on their cars should be up in arms about this as it's probably wiped a lot of value off your car after 6 months more rapidly than usual just to keep the car dealerships happy!

If you really wanted to remove the age thing from the plates, the obvious solution would be to just remove the year from the plates entirely.

and just have something like D-ABC 123 for Dublin or C-ABC 123 for Cork or whatever.

Or, just go back to a total random system like the new Franch system or NL has where you can't really identify anything from the plates at all, they're effectively just a sequence number.

If I were managing the system, I'd have introduced personalised plates with a good commercial charge for them with maybe 3 tiers of personalisation.

Say unique number for €150 (numeric bit only)

A word instead of a sequence number for say €350

    Full custom plate for €1000.

It'd bring in revenue by selling it as a service.

Also, I think if the plates are actually distorting the market, then a total radical change to just completely meaningless numbers would be the only way forward.

People could price/value their cars based on the registration documents year as they do elsewhere.
The county tag on the plate also tends to distort the second hand market as certain counties, especially Dublin but also Cork have major issues with non-local regs for fear of being identified as a culchy or from Kerry or something awful like that.

It's a very small country, do we really need GAA-style inter-county rivalry on our registration plates?!

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. Jesus people will whinge about anything these days, cop yourselves on. Splitting the year in half is an attempt to spread sales out throughout the year. If it doesn't work no harm, it's hardly going to cost much to print 131 instead of 13. One poster said we'd be a laughing stock around Europe, do you think Belgium really gives a f*ck what our reg plates say? Another poster pulled out the old "people are struggling to survive and they spend money on this?" nonsense.

Splitting the year has been successful in other countries and our dealerships are struggling to stay afloat so why not try something that might give them a slight boost? Because it's more fun to be pessimistic about everything?
