Changes to my setup

I'm currently using a HTPC (Windows 7 MCE) connected to the TV for saorview, freesat and general media duties. I also have quite a few DVDs & Blurays with a load of photos, movies, etc. on the main PC too.

I have been meaning to get/build a NAS with the intention of putting the lot on there for ease of access from the main PC and HTPC.

I have also recently acquired a Raspberry Pi and while wondering what I could do with it I think I may have come up with a solution which will work for me.

The idea is to take the current HTPC away from it's current home to under the stairs (can get TV & network cables there relatively easily), add a few HDD (thinking maybe 2*2TB) for storage, and setup something like TVHeadEnd and XBMC - I could then use the machine as a tv/media/file server. I could then install RaspbMC on the Pi and connect it to the TV/Amp and stream my content from the server. This would also allow me to use the main PC as a XBMC client giving me the bonus of tv in that room. This would obviously save me money on a NAS/components and power.

I already installed some CAT 5 to the attic when I was doing up the sitting room a while back and I can get some additional runs from the attic to the proposed server location reasonably easy. I could then put a GB switch in the attic to establish the network and the router (VF one died so I got a GB netgear at that time with half an eye on a house network) could sit with the server.

Is this a reasonably sound plan? Will a Raspberry Pi handle these duties ok? Does the Pi handle bitstreaming of audio via HDMI? Anyone see any pitfalls I may not have come up with?
