Just heard on the radio on the way in this morning that motor tax is expected to go up by 15%! Shades of 1976, the dreaded Richie Ryan budget of that year. We'll all be back to running around in 1200cc runabouts

Say 15% now and we'll all breath a sigh of relief when we're hit with 10% on Wednesday.

I thought this was only for cars on the new emission system? Is 15% for across the board?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

No details though on whether that's a 15% across the board, or on the CO2 rates etc?

    LOL - snap! :)

There is a thread on this already...

All I care about, if motor tax goes up by 15%, it'll be €759 a year for me.

    Meh...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,921 ✭✭✭munchkin_utd

15% of band A tax based on CO2 emmisions is a 24Euro increase.
15% of the €660 for taxing a 2L car on the old rates is a 99Euro increase.

translated into plain english, the gap will WIDEN between those on the old tax and those on new motor tax systems which makes the current unfair system just more unfair.

The low emissions bands will go up more than that me thinks, double I'd say.

ill have no qualms about something like this anyway! http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4215126

I think we'll see 15% on the emissions, and less on the CC rates. Just my thoughts though and based on nothing more than guess work.

Let's not forget that last budget we saw a greater than 50% increase on band A (€104 to €160)and a 44% increase on band B (€156 to €225).

As someone that has avails of the cheap tax they would have to be thicker than I already think they are to do an across the board increase. The gap will widen further and most likely tax take will stay the same as people move towards lower tax cars.

€225 x 1.15 = a shade under €259 for me. It's still ridiculously cheap compared to a car a couple of years older. If it doubles it's still cheaper. I'd hate to lose it but the two tier system cannot be left as it is. If anything there should be a plan to merge the systems over the next 3-4 years or else pay at the pump.

Am I the only one who couldn't really give a toss if my motor tax goes up by 15%?

I'm not trying to sound arrogant in anyway but in my view there are far more important things to worry about for me anyway than my tax going up €60 odd. I'm a student who doesn't make a huge amount of money due to being in full-time education but my tax going up by €20 every 3 months is something that won't cause me to freak out and look to buy a new car with cheaper tax.

I do understand that a 15% increase on a 325i would be near €150 increase so that would be fairly substantial alright, but for me to selfish for a minute, I won't be losing any sleep over it anyway.

Well that would mean around 252 euro increase on mine so i can tell you where they can stick that.

i dont care that much about the possible 80e increase on my 1.8 either but its not worth it for the performance i get from it. any time i drive my gfs 1.2 ibiza I dont go fast because I know i cant and i dont miss it either to be honest. turbocharged cars or a small car like an iQ is where it has to be at for me. id buy a diesel 1.3 corsa or Grande Punto in the morning because they are ridiculously cheap anyway even with the diesel premium

Expect the lower bands to go up alright. More significantly though there'll be an adjustment in the band thresholds. Expect the higher rates to take effect @ lower levels of CO2. The upper end of band A will end up in B, & upper end of band B will end up in C, & so on ... Then there's a rumor that the bands will be split so we have more of them: A1, A2, ..., B1, B2, ... etc.

Either way we'll be paying more :D

A proposed 15 per cent increase in motor tax comes on top of stubbornly high fuel costs for drivers. Low-emission vehicles will no longer be eligible for lower rates, sources said. The motor tax hike is expected to raise a further €150 million for the exchequer. A proposal to abolish the PRSI flat rate allowance of €127 is still to be decided.

Apart from there wouldn't be. Take a look at the last few budgets. Everyone is raped, but there's never any real "outrage" or anything done. People just take it, time and time again. Probably why they keep targeting motorists tbh

.......Probably why they keep targeting motorists tbh

Most motorists are being hit by lots of other taxes too.
Motor tax is a drop in the ocean compared to the USC for most people, the rumoured 0.2% of value propertytax will be a far greater cost than the increase in motor tax for the majority of homeowners who also own a car.

Most of the workforce has seen their take home pay reduced to the tune of a few hundred euro per month over the last 4 to 5 years, motor tax is fairly far down on the list of bug bears for most people.

We'll all complain when it goes up but compared to the property tax, cuts in childrens allowance etc etc etc not too many will be actually hugely bothered by an increase that lightens the pocket by €100/annum or so imo.

It all adds up. There is rarely huge increases or decreases in anything. A little here and there so no one gets upset.

Possibly stupid question but when would any hikes come into effect? Immediately after being announced? January 2013?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,035 ✭✭✭goz83

Usually January 1st, unless otherwise specified.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭September1

I noticed during previous hike that the raises are implemented in very unfair way. If I paid my tax for 12 months in November, I would be better of then if I paid in January. Depending on when you pay your liability you get different tax rate, they should just make people whose tax is paid earlier, pay appropriate difference to new tax rates proportionally to number of months that disc was in new year. This could be done on renewal to avoid administrative overheads.

Bollix to it anyways!!! Its gonna be €101.40 to tax me heep for the year!!!

I'm taxed up until Aug 2013.

I'm more concerned about changes to my weekly costs and fortnightly wage for the time being.

    :(

Although maybe if they took the cost down, more people might be inclined to pay rather than declare car of the road, and actully increase the revenue.

I can't see them increasing motor tax by 15%, well for the old system at least, that would be a savage increase. I would expect bands A, B and C to be hit hard under the new system though.

Multiply by 1.15 to give a 15% increase.

    (€1384.60)

Yep exactly, having no kids, no dependants etc, after they brought in USC the only real impact of the budget for me in the past two was the HHC and increased tax, impacted me by very little, on a per week basis it was probably less than €5 per week, unlike people being hit by other cuts, losses of allowances etc.

Paid my yearly road tax based on emissions.

    Cost me €1,139 :(

I like my cars, but I only do about 6k km's every year.

The high rates are already way to expensive, however I do think the A & B rates should be increased slightly. 156e for a 520d....come on.

If the govt is stupid enough to stick 15% across the board....actually of course they're stupid enough!

Looks like I'll be doing the 3 months on, 3 months off then :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭Swampy

Great. Another hike. I'm on the highest band of the old system. Looks like my tax will now equal or maybe surpass the value of my car. (not that I'll change it.)

I suspect if they brought in the requirement to declare a car off the road before it goes off the road so you can't drive an untaxed car on the road, that they'd bring in far more than 100 million e to be honest.

The amount of people I know who drive three months on two months off is pretty high.

Talk about begrudging. So some people get a chance to buy up cheaper tax before January. Would it really make you feel better to know that everyone else was sharing your misery. It's swings and roundabouts in life, maybe you get something better than one of them. God forbid anyone should fare better than you
