Does the gmail app work better than the mail app?

Have to say that the Gmail app appears a little more streamlined and familiar if you're used to the Gmail desktop interface. It's free so give it a gander.

why even bother with the gmail app? does it give any advantage over the built in support.
I hate the thoughts of having to use multiple mail apps and I found the built in mail support on the iphone is so far ahead of android it's not even funny.
I went to the S3 and had to have an app for gmail, an app for outlook and an app for my icloud accounts. Sure you can get get a mail app to do it all but they're bloody terrible really.
I switched back about 4 weeks later as I got sick of it.

gmail app blows purely for the guttering on the left and right of the email.

also when you zoom in to read the *tiny* text there's a padding on the inside of the box that obscures the text.

sure it looks pretty but what's pretty when it can't render text properly.
