Mercedes timing chain replacement cost

Evening all,

My 05 clk is due a service and I know I will need to get the timing chain done. I have done some research on what that will cost but have gotten quotes which vary a lot -€500 to €1000 from different places.

To the more knowledgeable people on this forum, what is a fair price for this work?

You sure it has a timing chain and not a timing belt? If it has a timing chain they typically don't need to be replaced.

Those Merc engines eat timing chains

OP, did you get details of each quote showing exactly what parts were quoted for? When the chains wear on these engines they usually wear out the sprockets as well so just changing the chain on its own is a waste of time.

Hi George, no I didn't ask for that detail so I probably should follow up on that. I don't know much about cars so just asked "how much to get the timing chain done?". I'll ask for more detail on the quotes

The mechanic I had been using for e last couple of years isn't about anymore so that's why I'm not sure about the costs etc. he recommended I get the chain done at 60k miles as they can stretch and snap. I did some checking and that does seem to be a potential problem with the kompressor engines

I don't know anyone in south Dublin but I know a lad in north Dublin (Lusk) who knows these engines inside out and equally importantly is a decent guy who will do the job right. PM me if you want his details.

Still, the Op appears to be having this work done as a preventative measure as there is no mention of any issues. Are those chains so bad that people are now getting them done at mileage intervals without any reported issues?

Yes that was my mechanics recommendation. I did some checking up on the web and it was recommended in some forums. Something about changes they made to the chains in 2002ish.

Christ, can the Germans make an engine that doesn't eat it's chain, first BMW now MB?

These guys know their Mercs and will do a timing chain for 550. They sorted a sensor problem on my CL and have the STAR diagnostics. The chains on the 200 kompressor engines are not the best of quality from the factory and are a little on the small side hence need changing along with the sprockets. Proper oil services are important for these engines.

Maybe the OP should have the chain inspected for stretching and the cam sprockets checked for wear, instead of just routinely replacing them. If it has had good quality and regular oil changes,and spent a lot of time thrumming along the motorway, it may be good for another forty thousand or so miles without any bother.
