Metal Tank and Kerosene

We had just put 250L of paraffin in the tank when the boiler decided to die, and i'm in the process of getting quotes to switch over to gas (assuming that's possible).

If gas is possible i'll have a large metal oil tank in my back garden, with nearly exactly 250L of paraffin in it. I was wondering how i would go about selling the paraffin and disposing of / scrapping the tank.

What kind of money would i expect for the paraffin, i just paid €270.00 for it a week ago.

There always seems to be certain members here who are more than willing to buy peoples unwanted kero, prety sure you'll have the PM's before evening, if not try advitising it on donedeal or the adverts.ie section here.

Phone the company you bought the oil from and ask them to take it back. I know that most supply companies will remove oil, for example your tank develops a leak.

there are plenty of people that will take the oil off your hands, how much they are willing to pay is another thing.
One thing to keep in mind if you sell the oil you are left with a tank that very few people will want, you may even end up having to pay someone to take it away.
And before people start saying its worth "x" amount in scrap some scrap yards wont give much or even anything for old oil tanks as they say they are contaminated and could be dangerous.

My advise would be to try get rid of the whole lot together even if it means you dont get what you expected for the oil. Just make sure the tank is loaded before the oil;)

I dont know where you actually stand if someone is stopped by the gardai transporting oil and tanks from your property, does it fall under waste permit territory? if so could you be liable for a fine as is the case with waste?

I hadnt even thought of the tank being contaminated, i just thought it'd too dangerous to cut into pieces to bring to recycling / scrap.

ill call the oil company tomorrow once ive got confirmation that gas is possible.

Be extremely careful cutting up metal oil tanks, as they will be full of oil vapor and are much more dangerous when empty than when full.

You may talk to your local dump, it is not suitable for recycling as it is petroleum contaminated waste. You may well find you need to pay for disposal

I dont mind paying for disposal, but I think it'll need cut. It weighs a ton, and i'm not sure how possible it'll be to lift it along the garden wall in one piece.

The oil company doesn't have the equipment on the truck to remove the oil, so i'll pop it up on adverts and see if anyone needs it, once that's gone i'll hit google and see bout getting rid of the tank.
