Lifting a car for maintenance

If the jack, creeper and stands are of a suitable quality, its a bargain. I have a feeling they might all be very delicate. I much prefer to use ramps - If im under a car, it sits on its wheels if at all possible.

That kit should be fine OP- I've been using axle stands for the last fifteen years- a Halfords set for the last six or seven of those- and never had a problem.

Each of those stands is rated for 2 ton and your Touran is approx 1.5ton, so you've got a good factor of safety.

The only other thing I would say to you is familiarise yourself with the correct jacking/support points on your car,and if you can't get the appropriate rubber to fit the cup on that jack, improvise with an old rag folded over a few times.

    Hi MickDW,

I like the idea of stands. Any thoughts on these stands please or could you suggest others?

These are rated at 1 ton per stand so I assume that means it handles a 2 ton car on both stands and mine as Randy suggested is 1.5 ton.

I'd go for the stands. Alot handier. Tricky enough to change the brakes on the ramps :pac:. Halfords do 3 tonne stands aswell. Thery're not much more expensive. They're stronger and give you much higher clearance. The only downside of them is they aren't collapsible. Axle stand are fine once you use them on a solid level surface, use the correct jacking points and chock the back wheels.

That price seems to be mad, up to twice what they're worth!

(Maybe not practical for buying from Ireland, but a good price indicator)

It would be worth checking your tyre widths if you go for the halford ramps. 185 max. Touran especially may be more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,679 ✭✭✭MAJJ

Good general tip but you may be thinking of a Tourag 4x4, mine the Touran is like a long Golf.

If you want to be able to change your brake pads Majj, then the ramps are no use to you- you'll need the axle stands as pointed out above by Ronnie.
If,however, you only want to do oil and filter changes, then ramps are fine.

    On a side note,( and on the off-chance that my OH reads this);

Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is my two post lift..........

    FYP ;)

Most of those suppliers on the Amazon site won't ship to Ireland, and if they would, the postage would be massive

Got my ramps a few months ago from micksgarage.ie. About €60 including shipping iirc

Brillant for oil changes. I used to use axle stands, but I much prefer the ramps :)

I use Aldi 2 tonne stands for pretty much all my diy work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,679 ✭✭✭MAJJ

Bit late coming back but thanks for all the advice so far. Have bought some tools so need to follow up on the rest.

To use axle stands do you need to use a jack like a hydraulic one rather than the regular on board car jack. I am thinking of clearance for the axle stands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭cletus

hydraulic lift is much handier all right, you can jack up in the centre front/back, get both stands in and have the jack in place for a little extra support

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,679 ✭✭✭MAJJ

Thanks Cletus, jacked up with the cars original jack and the clearance looks very low to use axel stands, so reckon I will need a hydraulic jack for higher clearance.

Remember to check the lift height and compare it to your stands

From this below the lift range may be 103 - 345 mm. I think this is the same one but no pics to confirm.

    Any thoughts if its decent?

I would say the touran has more than 185 profile tyres. 205/45r16 I would think

185 does not refer to profile. Just sayin'. :)
