No service book...

    Hi,

I went to see a car today. In the ad, the dealer posted a screenshot of the system where the car gets serviced (Windsor, an official Nissan dealer) as proof of service history.

I googled and called that Winsdor garage with the plate number and they red the service history for me over the phone. It matches 100% that screenshot.

However, when I went to see the car I asked for the actual book and I was told it had got lost by the previous owner. So there is no service book but I verified the service history with Windsor Official Nissan garage by calling them.

Should I take that as good?

    Thanks, appreciate the advise.

Service books can get lost it's not a big deal once the history can be verified by other means. As long as the history checks out with the dealer then that is the main thing.

If I were you I would get a print out from the dealer to keep with the car if you do end up buying it. It will make things much easier when it comes to resale time.

Just as long as the computer 'records' are not from the same guy who is selling you the car, you should be ok.

Thanks - no, the records are from the Nissan dealer, the dealer who is selling it is different.

    Cheers

That's fine then. If the car is over 5 years old it will make no difference. If its a newer car it may be harder to sell... I would want a book anyway.

It's 08 - still nice to know. Very low mileage for the age (11k miles), what makes sense with the reading the Nissan dealer gave me. Previous owner is a lady who apparently just used it to go to Tesco and the like so it should have received no abuse, but it has a couple of small scratches.

Short journeys do more harm than long ones and a lady owner doesn't mean the car gets no abuse either.

Labouring an engine can be more harmful than driving it. I know a lot of cars which loose power with "careful" owners, the only way a garage can fix it is to blast it down a motorway in 3rd gear till it burns the soot out it. They just have to make sure that the "careful" owner is nowhere near at the time.
