Back to Education Allowance

I just have a small question about the back to education allowance. I'm a carpenter and have been out of work for the last 3/4 months . I'm currently on jobseekers benefit and have been looking for work and have had a few interviews with no luck so far. In the last few weeks I've decided to go back to college. I spoke with someone I know from FAS about claiming the back to education allowance while in college and he told me that in order to qualify for the allowance I can't get a job between now and the start of term in September. He says that you have to be claiming jobseekers benefit for at least a year before you qualify for BTSC. Is this correct? If so, it basically means now that I have to choose between claiming jobseekers allowance and not actually looking for work or giving up on the idea of college completely.

Thats true, it s currently 9 months of JSB / JSA before you can apply for BTEA.

You can work part time as long as you claim a portion of job seekers for about 9 months before Sept 2013.

You can do courses in the mean time too, ie FAS etc.
