In another thread, someone said "this sounds ridiculous, but are there support groups for unemployed people?"

It's a tricky field (because success means that people leave the group, rather than stick around to offer their expertise to newbies), but yes, there are some. The ones I know about are listed below.

    Please add
    • Others you know about
    • Links to helpful on-line resources / groups that help people to stay employable and focussed especially when they are "involuntarily unwaged" for a long time in a difficult economy.
    • Personal reviews about groups or activities that you've found helpful in this situation.
If this thread works, then I'll add it to our list of useful resources.

(Usual board.ie guidelines apply re advertising.)

In Galway, there is West of Ireland Networking - which is open to pretty much anyone from the west or BMW areas who can beenfit from being involved. It provides "training, mentoring and networking services for the unemployed, entrepreneurs and small business owners "

I've heard about something for professionals called Dublin Job Club - I don't know much about it. This is the most recent link I could find: http://worksearch20.squarespace.com/

FAS run Jobs Clubs in manny areas, as a support group for job-hunting. Be aware though, that different job seekers can have very differnt needs. (eg experienced professionals vs grads with little experience vs manual workers looking for a career change) - if you're unluckly enough to join a Jobs Club with people who are at a very different stage from you, it may be frustrating rather than helpful.
