Given the size of Central London and the reliability of TFL overall, there's really no point in trying to find somewhere slap bang in the middle of London on the cheap when it's probably much easier to find somewhere you can afford and spend 20-30 minutes on the Underground. The closer you are to the centre of the city, the more competition there is with increasingly rich tourists (especially this time of year) for accommodation, so if budget is a concern the easiest thing to do is look a bit further out.

Where are you heading to and for how long? What sort of budget are you looking at?

I honestly don't think such a place exists. Accommodation in London is expensive at the best of times, but in the run up to Christmas, I imagine anything central will cost you at least one limb.

Besides, there are nicer areas to stay in than central London, but then, that depends on what you mean by "central".
