GPU gone? What to do?

I started getting artifacts on the screen while using my computer -- turned off and on again and I got a BSOD. Turned it off again and it wouldn't display anything when I started it back up.

I took the whole thing apart and put it back together, made sure all the components were seated correctly, tried with one stick of RAM etc, but to no avail. The graphics card (HD4870) was pretty dusty though, so I wouldn't be surprised if it overheated.

I want to make sure that it was indeed the graphics card before I buy a new one, but I don't have a spare card and there's no onboard graphics on my motherboard, so I can't really test the other components.

Advice? Anywhere that I could buy a graphics card and return it no questions asked if it turns out to be something else that is faulty?

Sounds like a GPU failure alright, I presume the system turns on as normal but doesnt display ?

do you have integrated GPU? try connecting it there and see if all works fine.
you tried to dedust that gpu? sometimes they get back to life after a good clean up or new thermal paste on.

Best bet might be to borrow one. Any mates/family with a pc that you could steal the card from for an hour?

Try cleaning the card thoroughly. Take the cover off the cooler if there is one and take a soft brush(like one you'd use for your clothes) to it. Make sure the fan spins freely and smoothly.

Also make sure you remember the 6pin power if that card needs it.

No error beeps off your board?

Actually thinking about it the 4870 has diagnostic leds on the back of the card,

    HD4870 LEDs

D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault

D1602 - Red LED On, shows External power connector A was removed

D1603 - Red LED On, shows External power connector B was removed

D601 - Red LED On, shows critical Core power fault

No, no beeps, but I'll check those LEDs out.

    @ED_E
I don't have the card right to hand to check out, but I have a feeling the cover is in some way connected to the cooler and because I didn't have any thermal paste/rubbing alcohol, that's why I didn't take it off and do a more indepth clean. I'll look at it again tomorrow.

If you have no cmos beeps you probably don't have any internal speaker on your case

Try to get one off an old PC and then plug it into the correct header on your board

This should give you some inkling to help trouble shoot

If once the monitor is working it stays on, and you can turn it off and on and it's still good, no crashes, etc..., it's probably the monitor. If it was the video card you would probably have random times when you loose the display. But easy to test, try a different connection and could also try a different monitor.
