Golf Mark 5 Exhaust System Light

    The Exhaust System Lighton my Golf Mark 5 just came on today.

    The warning lamp stays lit, does not flash.

    I'm not concerned with what it is, more how bad of a fault is it - how long will I able to keep driving the car for.

    The car is due a service and I'm obviosuly going to get it booked in as soon as possible but I need the car for the next few days so it would be later in the week before I get to the garage.

    Any advice here please greatly appreciated.
    (Why does this stuff have to happen on a Sunday!)

    Are you saying exhaust system light because the manual says its an emissions fault light?

    If its a yellow light shaped like an engine then its an engine control system fault.

    Most likely a coil pack gone. Do you feel it sluggish? Working on 3 cylinders?

    Yeah. That's the light. Was just going by what manual calls it.

    Is that problem serious. Can I get away driving it for a few days?

    Can't say I noticed it being sluggish.

    If it's an engine management light it could be ANYTHING,op doesn't even say if it's petrol or diesel.

    Could be many different things.

    EGR valve
    Cat gone
    A sensor gone
    Coil pack

    To name a few!

    EGR is my bet! Most common on VAG cars over 70k miles. OP would know all about it if he lost a cylinder!

    If the car is driving fine I wouldn't be overly worried about driving it for a few days.

    It's petrol. 100k miles 2004.

    Will get it to garage by Wednesday at latest but seems to be driving ok for the moment

    Is the EGR an expensive fix?

    EGR is just a guess but that would be a very common fault for a petrol MK5 with that mileage.

    No, get the carbon cleaned out of it for around €50. If that doesn't work an aftermarket part will cost around €150 off the top of my head plus labour.
