clean turkey weight?

    hi folks,
    A group of students in the local school have reared turkeys for charity,they are selling them by auction . they are trying to put a list of weights together for the auction but they can only give live weight. roughly how much weight would you subtract to give a oven ready weight?

    Not exactly sure but it should be around 60-70% killout. Are you selling them live or oven ready?

    they will be live at auction but we will then hand them over a week later oven ready.i 've heard this 60-70 before but i was hoping that was just cattle and sheep.i thought turkeys' might be a lesser percentage as they don't have 4 stomachs or a big head for eating grass. probably just wishful thinking on my part. anyway thanks for info

    It's a good few years since we kept turkeys. From memory (distant!) I think they lose about 2lb from when you weigh them live to weigh them cold New York dressed.
    Dont mind selling them with an oven ready weight. Sell them NYD.

    It a while since I cleaned out turkeys but on average it's around 2-3 lb,so a turkey weighing 14lb would come in at 11 oven ready that's a rough guide.
