we done all ours with the all sure bolus as well. Vet said he would far rather the loose bagged minerals though.

My vet said the opposite,At least with the bolus your are sure that the ainmal is getting the required ammount ,With the bagged stuff there is a certain ammount of it lost through the silage and if feed space is at a premium some cows will get too much and smaller heifers etc will get very little or none. The minerals in the bolus are chelated so they are a slow release over a peroid of time

Plus this year between wet and strong and rotten would lose even more.At least with bolus you know they get it.Thanks for the info guys

I think the all sure has the copper bolus at the end? I use alltrace here with good results. OP it might be worth looking to see what your cows/forage/soil are lacking in first. The alltrace boluses are about 6.50 each, and allsure with copper are dearer. Not 100% sure on these prices though.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Would it be a good idea to give minerals or bolus to weanlings on top of their meal if you think they are not achieving their weights or are not thriving well

I use the slow release mineral tablets that you hang in a net dispenser in the water trough
. Its meant to release the vitamins and minerals into the water over 7 days .
2 tablets per cow per week .

Im not mad gone on Boluses really myself

Trying alltrace bolus this year. The high iodine version. The high selidium version was another possibility. But am also giving a loose mineral on the silage

Interesting article about this subject on the examiner this week

Buy a cheap off the shelf dry cow mineral and make sure they are getting enough of it. We did all of the testing soil, bloods etc years ago got bespoke minerals made up with extra this and chelated that at serious money no difference to the cheap one properly administered. One bad milk fever case with a lost cow would go along way on a a tonne of meal. 1 kg of blend is enough to carry the mineral. Give for the last month and 1 tonne looks after 30 dry cows. Each bag of mineral would have 150 feeds in it at least. It's only a few cent per day.

    Evening all
I would always give a pre calving bolus to the spring calvers (all sure). Now my question is should I give it to a few autumn calvers that will be calfing
    In August, September.

    I do.
Give 6 weeks before due date.
    1 iodine & 2 copper selenium

Follow the same routine here the past couple of years , re meal mixed in with minerals, gave the cows a bolous aswell last December before calving and would easily say was money well spent.....
Always had issues with calves being a bit slow dopey at calving not taking to the bottle, this spring tubed 3 calves total out of 80 for beistings the rest mopped the bottle taking in 3-4 litres for sport

    What bolus was it?
You use no bagged minerals then?

Allsure bolous, minerals going in aswell bout 5 weeks before calving, remember Stan saying that putting out lime locks up minerals and we've gone with over 200 ton the past 3 years so covering bases by going with bolous and bagged mineral...
Couldn't get over the calves though, routine here is once they drop cows lick them of for 20 mins then they are put through parlour and milked with calves feed straight after, tubed at least 40% of calves last year just wouldn't take to bottle and this year they where downing their 3-4 litres for sport

    Remember that actually.
blood tested before he bolused to see what was needed and then blood tested a few weeks later too see if his problems were solved and ciws were still lacking in minerals

he would of been better testing the soil/grass
he mightn't of been giving enough minerals to sort what ever the problem was
