I've gone through a real phase of these kinds of films lately - 'Into the Wild', '127 hours', 'the way back' etc. Anyone got any recommendations? Something a bit off beat and unconventional preferably. I really liked Boyle's film '127 hours', its crazy really, its more or less all set in a tiny gap between rocks.

The Road is well worth a watch, its not exactly a happy movie though.

I wanted to kill myself after The Road - but it is worth a watch :)

What about the documentary film about Timothy Treadwell, Grizzly Man? Its weird and you will have mixed thoughts after it.

Saw both. Read the Road and enjoyed the film. Grizzly man not so much (Overwhelming feeling of boredom to be honest) I like Herzog though.

The Edge with Anthony Hopkins & Alec Baldwin would be my recommendation.

in that case, maybe have a look at this. a very strange film indeed, absolutely bleak and ott. I cant say as id recommend it as a good film but it is very unrelenting and one i doubt many would have already seen. also a bit of an oddity when you consider its budget versus its performance at the box office

Perfect. Gonna get it now and watch tonight. I was going to go watch the exorcist in lieu of a survival film so you may have just prevented a few nightmares as well...

    Alive - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106246/ - I'm sure you've already seen it

Walkabout - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067959/ - one of the few cases where the movie is better than the book.

Death Hunt - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082247/ - about a trapper evading the law in the freezing Yukon

    Castaway - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162222/ - "Wilsoooooon!!!!!!!!!!" (my name's Voight)

When I was a kid I loved My Side of the Mountain - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064708/
haven't seen it since I was 7 years old though, so it probably didn't age well... he caught and trained a falcon though, which is cool

Never Cry Wolf - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086005/ - not about survival so much but research way up north

Some really nice suggestions, many of them nature-dominated films.
I never had much sympathy for the protagonists in true-life survival stories. Many seem to be "conquering nature", so I amn't surprised when a few people run into trouble.
Would never read Touching the Void book, but the film is brilliant. Heard about the James Franco story at the time and did consider it one of the stories of the year. Man gets himself into trouble, same man get's himself out of trouble by himself.

    Alive (1993)
English language adaptation of Piers Paul Reids book. Ensemble cast, many with continued careers. The film hits a few of the main occurrences of the story. I had read the book years before and it goes into greater detail including about the survivors Catholic tradition.
For me a group through little fault of their own (some blame is apportioned in the book) gets into trouble and they find ways for continuous survival before trying to get out of the situation themselves. With Photos.

Fitzcarraldo - Klaus Kinski actor, Werner Herzog
    Terrific imagery. South America.

    Apocalypto - Mel Gibson directs.
A brilliant continuous chase scene. A small bit of man v. nature.

One film I don't know the name of. Maybe a short, about one hour long. Two Americans get lost in either Atacama desert or Patagonia (more likely Atacama) and attempt to walk out.

Was going to recommend Touching the Void too, great film and an amazing story. If you liked it it's worth checking out The Beckoning Silence where Joe Simpson atttempts the north face of the Eiger. Even better read the two books he wrote, they're called the same as the films :)

Encounters at the End of the World is another good Herzog documentary, not really survival but an interresting look at people living in the Antarctic.

More recently The Grey with Liam Neeson is a pretty good Man vs Wild type film.
