THE legal use of cannabis in medicines is to be introduced next year.

The Irish Independent has learned that the Department of Health is bringing in legislation to legalise medicinal cannabis.

The move follows applications from drugs companies to sell cannabis-based medicines in Ireland.

However, a spokesperson for the department stressed that the change would not apply to recreational use of the drug.

Given how easy it is to get on disability allowance, I can see this being a very bad idea.

It's a cannabis based product, rather than cannibis, as far as I know, for MS anyhow.

They won't be handing out joints in the local pharmacy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,992 ✭✭✭✭partyatmygaff

It's an MS drug called Sativex and it's based on the chemicals found in cannabis. Don't get too excited, pharmacists aren't going to roll joints for patients just yet.

There's a fair bit of debate on MS boards about this, will be interesting to see who can actually prescribe it and if it will be covered under the LTI scheme.

But it's NOT cannabis as such, it's a drug containing some of the extracts.

It doesn't get you high does it? Or it doesn't get you as high as the normal stuff?
I read something like that and if it's true, I can't wait to see the poor feckers getting it and wondering why it's not working for them.

It has been tested with a lot of MS patients, with varying results.I won't be signing up at the moment, am on enough stuff as it is.

Yeah of course it is I waited two years and umpteen medicals but it is really easy. And rest assured we are not all evil drug takers. Now why don't you try living in the real word not the one you think is real.
    This Means.
    1) Not everyone on the dole wants to be there in fact they are a minority
    2) Disability is no fun for the vast majority of people on it no matter what you think.
    3) Being on disability for most of us leads to a very difficult way of life

I could go on but I feel it may a complete wast of time as your mind is probably made up

Okay but how does that make what I said wrong? Lots of people are taking advantage of it and disability is one of the things they take advantages of.
I know a fella with a "stomach problem" that has him on disability. He never goes to his hospital or doctor's appointments.

I never said everyone on disability is doing something wrong. I'm talking about the people that take advantage of it will still take advantage of this scheme also.

Yes people take advantage of it. But it is easier for you to come on here and make digs about it why not try to do something positive and if you know someone that well and have proof do something about it.

As for the medicinal Cannabis this may be something that would be better for me rather than the Morphine patches I have to use which I am sure are doing me plenty of damage and as the nature of the drug is addictive it means my dosage has to be upped on a regular basis.
I also believe though I am far from sure that certain bits of the drug are taken out leaving the Medicinal parts of the Cannabis

I did report them. I don't see the problem in pointing something out that's true.
I don't get upset when people tell me other people on jobseekers allowance can be lazy feckers who shouldn't be on it. I'm well aware that not everyone on JSA are lazy feckers.

Well maybe you should get upset. "tell a lie enough and it becomes the truth"
Of course it is up to you if you want to accept people talking nonsense I personally would rather confront them

I wouldn't consider it nonsense at all.
It's a well known fact that many people take advantage of disability allowance or illness allowance and the likes.

I never said the majority of people are like that, though.

Really this is going nowhere fast. You do say when someone calls people on JSA lazy feckers you just accept it. If you really feel they are wrong say so

But they're right. A lot of people on it are lazy feckers but not all of us on it are.
Look, if I did offend you, I'm sorry, honestly.

    Nothing probably.

The likes of morphine and other strong opiates have been legally used as painkillers for years and it hasn't stirred up a storm with the Joe Duffy brigade nor spurred the government to legalise anything for recreational use.

I find it a bit disgusting that Sativex is being made available when it has killed people( http://www.medindia.net/news/view_news_main.asp?x=6382 ) and is based on a drug which in all recorded medical history has never directly killed anyone.

****ed up eh? Pity that people are stupid enough to overlook this.

    Killed people? In the plural?

I can only find one report of that single death and there's nothing to suggest it was anything other than an individual reaction to drug. There were at least nine other drugs involved too which may have complicated things. I'd be willing to bet she would have had the same reaction to any other cannabis formulation.

The problem with this method is that the THC will be taken out of the cannabis tablets they will give you, pharmaceutical cannabis is & will be useless. Once you take something out of the plant's natural make-up it's just not the same.

The THC connection to other dna in the flower is what makes people feel better. Once you take that out and stick man-made chemical junk into it you don't have the same healing reaction.

They should just get real...''they'' being the gubbermint...and legalise cannabis for personal use already, and stop dithering about like yahoos, when the world and its granny knows that loads of decent folk have used it since time immemorial and it is simply not the demon substance it is made out to be...Criminalizing regular otherwise law-abiding and generally ethical folk for a personal preference for weed say, instead of perhaps alcohol, is just no longer tenable in a modern, well-informed world. *Rolls eyes*...wouldn't ya sometimes wonder how we can still be fed so meekly with horse-crap ?

So you are not familar with another MS drug called Tysabri, I take it?

"August 2012 Tysabri PML update that was made available to physicians:
As of August 1, 2012, there have been 271 PML cases, of which 162 have been in the European Economic Area (EEA), 97 in the US and 12 in rest of world (ROW).
As of August 1, 2012, 59 of the 271 patients with PML have died."

It's about fecking time. Whatever about legalising a drug for recreational use, I can't see why anyone would want to ban it's prescription use. It's criminal that a government would prevent someone from taking a drug, prescribed by a doctor, to aleviate their pain.
