What song for first dance of wedding?

My best friends are getting married next year. They still haven't decided on a song for their first dance as a married couple.

What songs did people on here have for their first dance? Or what songs do you plan on having for your first dance?

Were I to choose one, I'd go with 'Harvest Moon' by Neil Young.

That's a frontrunner for ours :) Great choice.

We decided on our first dance song the week of the wedding!
For a long time the top contenders were heart of gold by neil young but the lyrics didn't really suit, feel like making love by bad company but it is hard to dance to, or stuck on you by elvis but it's quite up tempo and I'm so self conscious about dancing that hopping around to it would have mortified me!
In the end we went with forever by the dropkick murphys :D

We were going to go with Shania Twain - You're still the one because the lyrics fit so well with our life so far but it's so over played at weddings, we changed our mind 2 weeks before the wedding.

Went with DJ Sammy ft. Yanou - Heaven :D

We decided on something a little lighthearted but the words are funny and meaningful!:)
Adam Sandler from the Wedding Singer -I Wanna Grow Old With You
The band we had did a lovely version of it.

I wanna make you smile whenever you're sad
Carry you around when your arthritis is bad
All I wanna do is grow old with you

I'll get your medicine when your tummy aches
Build you a fire if the furnace breaks
Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you

    I'll miss you
    Kiss you
Give you my coat when you are cold

    Need you
    Feed you
Even let ya hold the remote control

So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink
Put you to bed if you've had too much to drink
I could be the man who grows old with you
I wanna grow old with you

We were thinking of 'Better' by Tom Baxter (not the boyzone version)...

But I LOVED that song from the Wedding Singer and might just have a re-think now;)

I think I've heard that 'Better' song at pretty much most weddings I've been to! So any alternative would be Better!

"Better" was very much song du jour 2 years ago, havent played it in the last 100 Id say Last 3 months its been labrinth and emile sande. "beneath your beautiful". Great crowd pleaser and good to dance to. 1000 years isnt so good to dance to the 3-4 times Ive had to play it.. although the first song is traditionally a slow one, thats VERY slow and VERY long.

It doesnt "really" matter, its whatever means something to you in the lyrics but if you dont have one and are searching for a song I always feel couples could help themselves with a more uptempo selection and very recognisable chorus. not full out fast, just something with a bit more movement to it, rather than dead slow... "baby I love you" by the ramones another big one.

If youre not american, DO NOT go on to the american websites looking for "best first dance songs for weddings". they dont tend to work as well over here as random country and western or luther vandross songs are not known very well this side of the pond..

We were thinking of Elbow, One day like this. Anyone heard this at a wedding?

works quite well actually. great number. or take his original "crazy love", the duet he did with dylan seems to be most popular.

the juno soundtrack number works well whenever requested...

Great tune but its very very long for a first dance IMO.

Id suggest you use it as the last song of the night which can be more memorable if done right. Ask your DJ. he should have a number of tunes to put on before it to have everyone up so he finish with the elbow number.

Often use it as the last song at a wedding disco. Never as a first but it is fantastic tune.

My wife and I had a swing/big band at our wedding and had ' I've got you under my skin' as our first dance. My most recent first dance I played was kraftwerk the robots but it wasn't a bride and groom first dance it was for everybody. The strangest choice I ever had was gold-digger by kanye west and it went down great.

We had Nat King Cole's When I fall in love. To me it just says every thing.

I only ever had that once as well and was great. I find songs with a fun element to them go down better and set the tone for the night.

strangest one I had was "f**k her gently" by tenacious D. Im not sure whats stranger, Having it as first dance or the fact 90% of the crowd knew all the words, young and old were singing it

    particularly good wedding IIRC

Fisherman's Blues by the Waterboys is a great first dance song too. Oh, and This Must Be The Place by Talking Heads :)

Please don't say that to my fiancée...

She's a *HUGE* Tenacious D fan and it would give my mother a fucking coronary...

    This

Because it's incredibly long and it'll annoy her mother.......won't happen tho, think it'll be a motown song...but I'm gonna keep tryin for this.

We had 'Unforgettable' by Nat King Cole.

I wanted 'At Last' by Etta James or 'All my life' by K-Ci and Jo Jo. 'Truly, Madly, Deeply' was another, as was 'When I Fall in Love' by Nat King Cole, and 'I Choose You' by Paris.

Another popular song is Aerosmith 'I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing'.

I'm a huge beach boys fan and I loved it.. It went down a treat too !

I suggested that to my friends, but the bride-to-be vetoed it, on the grounds that the first line is "I may not always love you..."

FFS DON'T have 'You're Beautiful'!!. Not the most suitable of songs...

Having this as the exit music in the church. Obv getting in a violinist to go with the organist. Not sure how a female voice will go with it. And thinking we'll have to change "drinking in the morning sun" to "thinking in the morning sun" to suit fact that we're singing it in the church and older crowd!

For the first song we have to go 80s to suit the band (Delorean so strict on only 80s for their songs!) and have chosen "It must be love" by Madness. Slowed down a little it should be good.

I always took that to mean drinking it in as in soaking up the pretty sunrise, I wouldn't be bothered changing one word in a whole song for fear of an older person picking up on it.

We had a strictly 80s band as well but a non 80s first dance song, they downloaded it onto an iPod and played it through their sound system, then went straight into their set when it was finished.
Love love love the band we had but none if the songs they had were anything wanted for a first dance!

We're gettin married n thinking of "I won't give up on us" by Jason Marz or "you r my destiny" by Lionel ritchie but that one nyt just b a bit to fast!!!;)

We had 'more than a woman'. We learned the dance from Saturday night fever and it went down a treat. It seemed to encourage everyone onto the floor for the rest of the night!

We're going with either the edited version if The Doors - Light my fire. The original is like 9 minutes long! Or Thank you by Led Zeppelin.

To be honest we will probably go with led zep and then follow it with the doors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,040 ✭✭✭paulbok

we also had The Cure - Friday I'm in Love played when leaving the church by our musicians.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭Glitter

We had the Michael Bublé cover of 'Moondance' by Van Morrison. Quite fast but it worked for us as we were doing a bit of a dancey dance.

We also had Natalie Cole's 'Orange Coloured Sky' for leaving the ceremony, but I I think it would make a lovely first dance song.

We had this too for our wedding. My husband recorded himself singing it and the band played it over their PA system while we danced. It was one of my favourite moments of the day. :D

Oh my OH would love Thank You led zep - we were always going to have just like starting over by john lennon but to me it just doesn't suit the band so have settled on For You Blue which we both love!!

This was our first dance song.

If it be your will by Leonard Cohen. For many reasons.....

And since then we got the rings engraved
one wedding ring says "it it be"
the second ring says "your will"
