As a Chiefs fan the breaking news from KC is crazy. Jovan Belcher is believed to have taken the life of his girlfriend and mother of his newly born child before driving to the team's facilities and ending his own as well

“We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”

awful stuff, in league since 2009 so not sure the nfl can be blamed here, just seems like a nutcase who happened to play football

Jeeze. Those poor people. RIP all, especially the Mammy and her baby...:(

Panthers GM said the nfl advised them to travel as planned.

Don't think the baby is dead.

Not sure how they can expect the Chiefs to play tomorrow if it took place at Arrowhead and some of the staff were witnesses.

Obviously those details are unconfirmed at this point.

Yeah same. Even if there were no witnesses the game shouldn't be played. Rumours that it was in front of Crenel and Pioli as well.

They obviously have to play the game at some point, how hard is it to reschedule an nfl game?

Just read it on nfl.com. Jesus its such a tragedy and have the league office lost its mind ? How can the chiefs even prepare for the game after some of them apparently witnessed it. It's only a game for christ sake.

The players actually saw it and have to play tomorrow? What is wrong with the league..postpone the game, its not like it affects the playoff race at all

    Jesus, awful awful story.

    RIP to both of them.

    terrible news.

Genuinely wonder how many concussions he has had during his football career. Concussion discussions well and truely back in the limelight,

Eh? Because you just brought it up out of the blue?

Concussions have never been far from the limelight for years now anyways but it's a little crass to be calling it as having anything to do with concussions at this stage.

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8697360/kansas-city-chiefs-player-commits-suicide-team-facility
Police spokesman Darin Snapp said authorities received a call Saturday morning from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles away from the Arrowhead complex. Snapp said a call was then received from the Chiefs' practice facility.

Upon arriving, Snapp said that police witnessed a black male in a car with a handgun to his head talking to two Chiefs officials. That's when police heard a gunshot.

Members of the Chiefs organization told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that some players noticed the shooter was troubled in his car, and went in the facility and told someone, before Pioli and Crennel called police and went outside to talk to him. The player then killed himself in front of them.

Snapp said that before turning the gun on himself, the player thanked Pioli and Crennel for all they had done for him.

Can't imagine being in Pioli and Crennel's position. Must've been horrible.

Surely there is no way in their right mind the league can expect Kansas to play tomorrow. Ridiculous if they do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,696 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

According to fox news he did shot himself in front of pioli and crennel after thanking them for all they had done for him. :(:(

Jesus they must have been horrible. The league need to cop on and cancel the game NOW.

Twitter still saying that the game will go ahead. Have to believe Goodell has more common sense than that.

I didnt call it as having anything to do with concussion im not a doctor but it does raise the point of concussions again. its not crass at all given the discussions indicating that brain trauma from multiple concussions could be a cause of suacidal tendancies and you cannot ignore the worry trend of NFL players who have passed away in such circumstances.

What a crass remark to make. The mere fact that FOUR NFL players have taken their own lives this year IS a cause for concern. So much so, that the NFL and the players union are conducting research into this.

Dave Duerson (Google him - ex Chicago Bears, played in Superbowl XX) had a degenerative brain condition that caused him to take his life. He specifically requested his brain be tested.

Now THAT'S alarmingly regular in anyone's book.

I still think the game gets postponed.

Not to comfortable with the RIP comments. From the looks of things, this guy riddled his gf and the mother of his new born child. Then killed himself infront of others which will possibly scar them for life.

Oh my god this is nuts. Rip to all.

A lot of people on here talking about possible brain injuries from hits. Well I don't buy that as much as I think that PEDs and roid rage may have a lot to do with things like what happened today.

Its a very sad day for those people, to have a young life taken that way is just so horrible. Really feel for Romeo and Scott too, I just cannot imagine the state they are in after seeing something like that.

I don't know if the game should be postponed or not. I can see the reasons for it but also reasons for it to go ahead. I think playing it might be best for a lot of the players/coaches to get their minds off of this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

Well, if it's true it happened in front of Crennel and Pioli, then it would take a heart of stone to call a game so soon after. How could he concentrate? How could anyone??

Having said that, I have also read reports that Crennel and Pioli had their backs turned when it happened.

Either way, a dreadful turn of events and I hope Goodell sees sense and postpones the game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,224 ✭✭✭✭SantryRed

It feels inappropriate even talking about the game considering what happened only a few hours ago, but it is terribly difficult to rearrange a NFL game. They could even move it back to maybe Tuesday like the Eagles and Vikings did a couple of years ago.

    Will Sunday's games go ahead?
In America you can be sure they will.

Uncomfortably similar incident to Chris Benoit in the wrestling a few years back.

Surely they won't go ahead with the match, Ulster cancelled their match in the rugby this season following the death of Nevin Spence. Is the NFL that money hungry that they won't allow the match to be postponed?

Definitely going ahead. Decision made apparently after talking with "NFL, NFLPA, Romeo Crennel, team officials and team captains"

There will be the usual clamour to blame concussions and brain injuries for this tragedy but at the moment it's all just speculation! I've heard that it was his on/off girlfriend so it may not be football related at all! Personally I think judgement should be reserved until an inquest is conducted!

As for the game it should be up to the chiefs players and staff! As you say sometimes the game can be a well needed distraction!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,341 ✭✭✭✭Chucky the tree

From the rumours going around it seems it's not football related and not case of him just doing this for no reason. Obviously rumours could be false and he did just flip.

Out of respect for both families it shouldn't be happening. I really couldn't care less if the Chiefs want to go ahead, it's simply wrong. This isn't someone's father dying, this is a murder-suicide with the suicide happening at Arrowhead itself.

It would be a terrible image to put out there if the game goes ahead tomorrow.

Completely agree but this is the US.
    Yankee dollar rules!
But they will observe a pre match memorial and that will be deemed proportionate and sufficient.

Hmmmm, to be honest, and I'm not saying this to be controversial but I think it is correct to go ahead with the game. To postpone it would be to honour a murderer IMHO.

No it would be done to give those people involved, like teammates and coaches time to reflect and get their thoughts in order. Nothing to do with honouring anybody.

It'd be honouring a young woman who's been left dead and riddled with bullets, a child who has lost both parents and two extended families that have to be utterly devastated right now. I can't see how you, much less the NFL, can work around that and it not come off looking incredibly poor by wanting to have a game 24 hours later at the scene of (part) of the crime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,879 ✭✭✭D3PO

its terrible decision by the NFL. Any other non US sport and the game is cancelled without even a consideration of playing the game.

its sickening how much the greenback dictates what the NFL does.

And although it was the 'Chief's decision to play', I wonder how much pressure they were under from the NFL and in all honesty, are they really in a proper state of mind to make such a decision?

I do see the merits of the argument for calling the game off. When I first thought about this I agreed that it was very callous that they would go ahead but the more I think about it, I guess I just feel that to postpone the game would be more of a mark of respect for him than for the extended families. And they're the ones who deserve our sympathy.

Well, life does go on. It's logistically very hard to call it off this close to the game.

    It's completely doable.

The chilling feeling is that the money it'd cost to do so is a big part of the decision to go ahead. That is a truly disgusting thought.

The game is actually a good distraction for the players IMO. I know people are saying that they should be allowed to mourn and that but I honestly think that at a time like this the players just want something to focus on as a team.
