Newbie to this stuff, as recent thread in this forum will show :o

Got a luvverly new Sky+HD box FOC installed the other day and was wondering what I could do with the old one.

I tried hooking it up to a spare tv with scart, it shows up ok but can't do anything. I'd hoped that we could view the programmes that had been recorded on it but no joy.

It wasn't connected to the dish nor was there a card inserted.

Does it need to be connected to a dish to view recorded programmes or does it need another card?

Or do simple take out the HDD, reformat it & use it in a caddy & feck the carcase in the bin? :p

it needs to be connected to the dish. you wont be able to view any recordings though.
it will allow you to view free channels

you could sell it on adverts.

It will need to be connected to the dish...And you still need to pay sky a sub to be able to view the recorded programmes. I think they do that basic at about €10 a month just to view the recordings, and be able to use the pause,rewind..etc..
    .

Bugger that, giving them enough as it is without paying more to watch stuff I've already paid for!

Can't understand why the Sky engineer hasn't the wherewithal to move recordings from old box to new.

    HDD out it is then!

    Thanks lads.

you can use a program to copy from one hard drive to another
but it involves removing the hard drives from both boxes and hooking up to a pc.

    copy+ its called.

Downloaded that, but am i correct in thinking that it's only to copy from one Sky HDD to another; you can't view the recordings except on a Sky box?

My difficulty there would be opening the new Sky box & voiding warranty :o

Ur only wasting ur time, the program is only for where you upgrade the original hard drive in your existing box, even if you copy them over they wont work as its paired to the box and card...and if you have changed your box then your recordings are no good nemore...

Both SKY and UPC encrypt recordings.

With SKY you can only decrypt the recordings for which you have a current valid sub for.

The workaround is to play back the recordings to an external recorder BEFORE you cancel the sub.

    Thanks lads,

HDD out so & box in bin, reckon the drive's worth more in a caddy than I'd get for the box :p

    Thanks again
