Okay, I'm not crazy, I promise, but I was wondering if anyone in the Dunmanway area was experiencing the frequent sounds of, what I can only describe as a really loud gunshot from far away? They're coming every 30-40 seconds all evening.

Am I actually going crazy, or is there something obvious that I am missing?

Yeah, that did cross my mind. It's pretty strange. Still going on outside as I type. Wondering if anyone else here at the moment in West Cork is hearing it? When I heard it first earlier, I thought it might have been work going on in the Tarmac yard about a mile away from me, but it's now almost 1am, and it's still happening.

I'm in the town and there is no noise at all. My dog is frightened of load bangs and usually will get nervous but she's fast asleep. Could it be a metal gate swinging?.
A good few years ago we used to hear the concorde break the sound barrier as it got over the Atlantic. You could set your clock to it.

Hmmm. We're actually in Ballinicarriga, and we're up pretty high, so that might have something to do with it. I have a lab who is also afraid of a lot of noises, but this doesn't seem to bother him. That said, it's quite a low, bassy noise, so it might be below what he can hear. This is bugging me. Can't figure out what it is. Thought it might have been the Carbery factory, but I can't see what they could be doing.

This is more like a quick, intermittent gunshot.

Are you aware of the strange noise being heard around the world over the last year or so?

Just watched the video on the Daily Mail site and it's freaked the poo out of me! Going to bring in the dog to keep me safe. :o

This doesnt sound like it is coming from the sky. Sounds far away, but you get the impression it would be pretty loud if you were close to it.

I'm just north of the town, not Cool mountain north though :pac:

Can't say I've heard anything, will keep my ears open though. I can't help but imagine some kind of Lost style hatch or something :D

Okay folks, can't believe no one has replied to you all with the answer yet. It's called a banger. It's an agricultural device used to scare away vermin and birds from crops. Also used to deter foxes away from sheep lambing. It emits an intermittant loud bang similar to a gunshot. It's operated on propane gas approx every 30 seconds although it can be set to whatever timeframe the farmer wants.

I find it really annoying myself but nothing I can do about it unfortunately!

What crops are growing at this time of year?
Its also a month or so too early for lambing.
The banger my farmer friend has very speradic bangs.

Thanks for informing us with the intricate workings of a banger, never knew such things existed at all  Like I said previously I haven't heard the noise myself so it could well be such a contraption. I'm still holding onto hope that it is "The Hum" :)

Have to agree with Jeju, bangers aren't normally used this time of the year. As an aside comment, a neighbouring farmer here last year used a soundtrack of hawks screeching instead of a banger. It was more annoying than having a banger going off every 30 seconds!

I didn't say there WERE any crops growing at this time of year or that any sheep WERE lambing at the moment. I said that is what they are used for. IF and WHEN the farmer decides to use it is his business.

there is one going off for the last week in east cork. If they had seeded a winter crop could be used to keep pigeon etc away from eating the seeds before they start to sprout etc
A flock of birds can cause alot of destruction to crops
