Canon 450d - new lens advice

the bad news - bit of an accident with my 18-55 kit lens and I need to replace it.

the good news - my sister is going to new York next week so I've an opportunity to upgrade. It'll be used for family portrait, landscape, general walking around photos. At some stage I will be moving to a full-frame so it would probably be wise to get an EF lens. EF 28-135?

I also have a nifty fifty - the lens fell a couple of years ago and the lens itself pops out now and then, but I can put it back in and it works but photos with it are very soft / autofocus seems to have a mind of it's own so was thinking I might replace that as well. Again, was going to upgrade so had been looking at the 50mm 1.4 or the 40mm pancake or the equivalent of Nikons 35mm 1.8 if there is such a thing?

budget could be upto 600 for the 2, but might be able to squeeze another bit if I thought I was getting good value...

    comments and advice greatly appreciated...

Get the pancake anyway. It's a lovely little lens. B&H have a massive store worth checking out and they also have a second hand section that might be worth looking at.

Got this today. Very very impressed with it as an upgrade to a kit.

    Worth considering

thanks brokenarms but I think I will probably stick to Canon EF lens.

what do people think of the Canon EF 35mm f/2?

    I had the 35mm f/2

It was by far my favorite lens. Sharp an fast with a creamy bokeh. It never really came of the camera at all .
Everyday walk around, portraits and landscapes . It did everything well. Its also quite tough and can take a knock.

You could do alot worse that the canon 35 prime.

I think the EF 28-135 is the most realistic option as a general walkaround?

    toss up then between the 35 f2, the 40mm f2.8 and the 50mm 1.4

from a price perspective the 40mm might be the best one to get for now, and wait until I get a full frame to get the 50mm.

    advise me o wise ones....
