How To Deal with Religious People?

I do not believe in god, but I am not an aethiest either. I just feel the answer is something else and we many never find it. Either way, I am not bothered by it and I do not give a toss about their being gods one way or another. Each to their own.

Thing is, I have a friend and the family are all holy rollers. Big time catholics. They practically live in the local church. Now they are nice people, but the other night my mate's mother asked me about religion and I blurted out. "Oh I do not beleive in god or the bible or any of that stuff, it is not for me."

I was polite and friendly about it. But I sensed that 'something' happened when I said it. That I felt less welcome in their home. I really do not know how else to have handled it except pretending I believe in god.

It's like dealing with another species when talking to religious people. I am at a loss.

Sorry to say they are. But not the fascist types. More the parish team supporting type. No problem with these folks.

I think you mixed up fascism with something else? Did you just want a fancy word? Do you know what it means?

But does it really come up that much in face to face conversations? I could not tell you most of my close friends' stance on religion, and they don't know mine either!

Except one who is a placenta eating wiccan, which just goes to show that religion isn't really appropriate casual conversation :P

'God' (Christian deity) isn't the only god. There's thousands of the f*ckers. You're only atheist when you don't believe in any of them.

I do not believe in god, but I am not an aethiest either. .

Your problem is in the first line and I didn't bother reading past that.

If you don't believe in god or religion then you are an athetist!

Either get believing or accept what you are, it doesn't swing any other way.

You can't deal with them as no doubt they're convinced they're right about everything and have no less than a God to back them up,your either with them or if not you will be looked on with a mixture of bemusment and weariness

It does in my opinion. He just doesn't care one way or another, holds no opinion on the matter and doesn't want to be categorised.

If you don't believe in God then you're an atheist, whether you want to be categorized or not.

I have some friends who're snake-worshippers. It's very awkward when we're having dinner and they want everyone to do the ceremonial snake-kissing ritual before we eat. I politely refuse, of course.

Get odd looks for not wanting to kiss the snake though. Completely ruins dinner.

If you don't believe in God then you're an atheist, whether you want to be categorized or not.

Only with the most broad use of the term.

In modern use, atheism implies the explicit belief that there are no deities, rather than the absence of belief in deities.

I've friends that believe in god big time, it's fine as long as we don't get too drunk and start talking religion. But even then we kinda respect each others point of view.

You may not be an aetheist, but you're definitely an atheist.

In modern use, atheism implies the explicit belief that there are no deities, rather than the absence of belief in deities.

You can stick with the implications, I'll stick with the facts. The fact is that an atheist is someone who doesn't believe in a deity, hence the OP is an atheist. Whether or not he explicitly believes there is no god is irrelevant.

The problem there is that Islam, Judaism and Christianity share a god (Allah/Yahweh/God).

I remember a relative who considers himself religious saying to me recently '' you know not all priests are pedophiles ''

    to which I replied ...

'' of course not but it wasn't to long ago that you would have been of the opinion that they didn't exist at all and those who were abused by them were lying ''

As Jack Nicholson said to Tom Cruise in A few Good Men, '' You cant handle the truth '' .

The only time that I've "almost" had a religious discussion during the last twenty odd years living in Ireland, was when I once opened the door to a Jehovah's Witness. I'm pretty sure that my next-door neighbour is a devout Catholic because she has her new car blessed every year. That's about it.

The only ones obsessed with religion are the non-believers on here, which I find particularly strange.:pac:

    I think you'll find I'm not.

The claim "I do not believe in God, but I am not an atheist" is a valid claim, which means the same thing as "I am agnostic".

Atheism is a refusal to believe in a deity, rather than a lack of belief.

You're both wrong. The OP is an apatheist. He doesn't care if there is a god or not.

Anyway, OP should have said he wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition.

Atheism is a refusal to believe in a deity, rather than a lack of belief.

No it's not. Atheism is not believing in a deity. Agnosticism is not knowing whether or not there is a deity. One is a matter of belief, one is a matter of knowledge.

I don't believe any deity exists (atheism), but I don't know if any deity exists or not (agnosticism)

Atheism is an absence of belief. How strong or weak your lack of belief is is irrelevent, once you don't have a belief in a deity, then you're an atheist.

Atheism/Theism are terms relating to belief.

Agnosticism/Gnosticism are terms relating to knowledge.

I think you'll find you are wrong. In both cases neither the atheist or the agnostic has knowledge. The athiest simply refuses to accept that.

I am agnostic, I believe there may or may not be a god.

This is what I say to religious people: "There are about 2000 gods in existence and Christians only believe in one, so you don't believe in 99.99% of gods, so your pretty much as atheist as me"

On a serious note I hate going to the inlaws down in the country cos theyll have you at mass in the morning and you can't get to sleep because of the lit up sacred heart. I was midway through a conversation when my wife's aunt and mother cut me straight off to pray to the Angelis! I thought I'd got caught up in some religious competition. Each to their own, but I hate being made do something just because everyone else does
