How much do mart fees vary between marts for buying and selling.

Out of interest how much does your mart charge and is it a fixed fee or a %

Well it's all very well knocking mart fees but is there evidence that marts are making big profits? Do people want to go back to the fair? Lots of people taking a chance on selling in the field this autumn which is a high risk activity. Marts cover the risk for lads for way less than any insurance company would even contemplate.

    Very true
But Its costing high 20s to sell here if over 1k sale price and 9 to buy
Thats over half the profit I aim for on short keep cattle(70day)
So I see big benefit to buying on land prividing seller knows value of stock and is aware of costs plus haulage
I always pay by cheque on day of deal and give seller a few days to sort out paperwork/clear cheque so have built up trust in locality
Big problem I find is guys dont know the value and wont sell at home

Buy and sell in Tuam Mart €9 to buyer, 1.5% to seller

I've noticed the last animal I bought in Carlow mart had €11 commission on them, was €9, IMO 9 is plenty

This is the issue with most lads selling. They go to a mart and see only the highest priced cattle. They then expect that across a bunch of 20 including the 1-2 poorer animals in the bunch. Then you have the lads with weighing scales that fail to take the 30kgs that an animal will lose on the way to the mart into account.

Then there is haulage. It is much cheaper to get a lad to haul cattle home from a mart than ask him to spin 40 miles to collect threequarters of a load. So buyer in the field will have higher haulage costs. He also has to do the travelling you will not buy the first lot you see.

Mart fees are now an issue to be taken into account. Did not know they are going to 20/head for seller. And yes I know that mart are not making much money but on a 500 euro animal 25-30 euro between buyer and seller is substantial.

Margins with beef are so tight it is really leading to more buying and selling in the field. However there are risks involved to both buyers ans sellers. With sellers it is payment however this can be overcome by payment up front and 3-5 days to get cheque into account. For buyers risk is no of movements, a few of the animals might have been for a few spins and paperwork for cattle may not be in order.

However if you allow for cattle having 3 movements in there life, put mart fees at an average of mart fees could be 70 euro and haulage to and from another 50-100. On an animal that grosses maybe a bit with 1300 euro that is substantial money. If mart fees are eliminated, and haulage is only farm to farm costs can be got back down from 150 to 50 euro.

This is why when i go buying cattle I can often afford to pay 10-20 more if the owner drops them off to me.

DONT FORGET TO OPT OUT (IF YOU WISH) OF YOUR IFA DEDUCTION-IF YOU SONT TELL THEM, THEY WILL DEDUCT IT, EVEN WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION, AND IT GOES TO THE NICE FOLKS AT IFA

carnaross now up to 17.. euro to sell! Did profit monitor info for btap and could'nt believe mart fees came to over 900 quid. that along with loss of weight by the time they cross the scales has me seriously considering selling out of the yard.

However you have to allow for these factors selling out of yard. Buyer is picking up transport costs often for a longer spin.

And there's risk about not getting paid etc

most lads will pay and allow 4-5 days to cash cheque. Or else pay by direct debit into account.

The cheque isn't cashed in 4-5 days, your bank is affectively loaning you the money, it can take up to a month for the cheque to cash but usually with national banking it's quicker. The money is only in your account when the other issuing bank receives the cheque, which is posted back to them in bulk, and transfers money to your bank. Plenty of people are scammed by this, if the if the issuing bank decides the cheque is bogus the money will be yanked straight back out of your account and you're left chasing the purchaser.

It takes 3 working days to clear a cheque. You can check after day three. You can also clear a cheque straight away. You lodge at the counter and ask them to clear cheque ( you could before so I presume you still can). They ring the cheque owner's bank and make sure funds are insitu and if funds are available youcan clear cheque straight away. However it costs a fee it is at least 20 euro I think. And like I stated you can have a direct transfer into your account

The reality is that you are tranferring cattle into another farmers herd so you have his herd No and detalis. You have his car Reg, the truck he collects them with reg(if that is how he collects). No all the messing is from buyers, you have owners that have not signed cards so no of movements can be wrong. Buyer has to hope that the dark night you collect cattle that seller had not switched a few animals. Not to mind that when you arrive at farm it is sellers farm. The other issue is if sellers has all paper work right, I had an issue with a lad that some cattle were in another mans name seller owned cattle but they were not transfered into his name.

However with costs of transport and mart fees all options have to be considered.
