Proper Bar and chain oil is best.
You can get litre bottles of it or I usually buy Alco brand in 1 Gal (us) bottles.
It has Tackifier in it to help it stick and not fling off.

I buy mine from my local co-op that sells Chainsaws and small engines.
Failing that some motorcycle shops that service small engines like strimmers etc will sell it.

the cheapest engine oil in the motor factors works perfect, no need for anything fancy

So some 10w 40 engine oil would do the trick?

    Is that right?

    Thanks.

engine oil is not ideal in the long run. proper oil is alot stickier to cling to the chain at high speed.

I can't understand how people never follow the recommendations from manufacturers of tools/engines. if the manual says chainsaw oil, then it should be used

It says nothing about what chainsaw oil to use,in the booklet.

The chainsaw was supplied with a 100mm bottle of 2 stroke mixture, and thats all.

Ive been through the booklet and there is nothing about what type of chain/bar oil to use.

    Think about it like this:
Chain lube tank is under the exhaust.
    Exhaust gets hot.
Hot oil tends to thin and fling off very fast.
If you don't use oil with a tackifier then the lube value is greatly reduced.
I've seen saws that are covered in black oil. Bar and chain worn down to little stubs.
Oh I use old engine oil to lube my chain, its great stuff!
You have to breathe it in as well genius!
Just buy the proper stuff, its not really anymore expensive in larger quantities than motor oil.

some of this repeated from here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056526324

I bought this chain lubrication oil and have had no problems with it. I think it is much better for your health to breathe in biodegradable vegetable oil rather than a mineral oil (the chain oil is vaporised or aerosoled), as well as the obvious benefits to the environment by not spreading a mineral oil everywhere. The way I put it to my customers is that would they prefer me to spread a can of 3in1 over their garden or some vegetable oil that will biodegrade away. I wouldnt do that to my own garden or woodlands would you? I contacted their local supplier and he dropped in a 5 gallon drum outside my shed on his way to somewhere else. The cost was above the cost of a good chain lube oil, but worth it in my opinion.

As a further recent update I have spoken to a few people who use vegetable oil straight from the supermarket to lube the chain with no problems other than you have to turn the oil up to max, and you smell of chips.

For 2 stroke petrol mix I used to use a sthil 50 to 1 mix, again less pollution, less fumes to breathe in and I found it very good for the saws, Sthil also, but now I use Aspen and wouldnt use anything else. Reduces environmental impact of harmful hydrocarbons by 99% and almost no fumes to breathe in!

From Environment Agency UK publication (attached below):

How to find out if waste oil and wastes that contain oil are hazardous A guide to the Hazardous Waste Regulations Reference number HWR08 Version 3.1 – June 2007

Used engine oil is considered to be a category 2 carcinogen

There are more details of other oils here too. search "waste oil" here:

What did I say? That castrol stuff is way over priced.
Alco is good lube, I use it all the time.
