Leap card cheat/trick?

Saw this today. I was exiting Pearse station through the automatic gates. A guy was entering through the one right beside me. He tagged on, opening the gate, and then as he was passing through, he put the card over the corresponding sensor on the other side (the one on the gate I wanted to exit through).

I saw this very clearly, as his doing that stopped me from sticking my ticket in that gate, so I moved to the next one to the left. I didn't notice if his manouevre opened the gate I would have gone through.

Why would he do this? Is it possible to tag off immediately after tagging on in order to avoid paying or save money?

Nope, 2 minutes must elapse between validations on Irish Rail, if you present the card again at an exit at the same station in the 2-5 minute window the transaction is cancelled and card is refunded

If you exit with a card which has not been validated 4.30 is deducted

So it might have cancelled the transaction and refunded, and maybe he was planning on getting off at a station like Portmarnock or Kilbarrack, where there are no exit barriers?

Otherwise, I wonder why he did it?

    a) Either it was to intentionally inconvenience me (unlikely), or
    b) Habit or an accidental or random action (more likely).
    .

    Ta, anyway!

There has to be 2 minutes between validation attempts, so the card would remain tagged on.

    Its called pass back protection

Ah, ok: two windows -- 2 minutes and 2 to 5 minutes. Gotcha!

The window for refunding is from 2minutes to at least up to 10 minutes.

I've forgotten to tagg off the Luas, gone back an hour later to make another journey, and found that I couldn't tag on as the card was STILL tagged on!

I've also tagged on, changed my mind - remembered another errand to run, and been unable to tag off. :-( It seems to me (not knowing about the 2 -5 minutes) that every time you try to tag off, another episode of 2 minutes is added on.

This is a common trick in London with the Oyster Card too.

So, if I'm following this correctly, you can arrive at station, tag on and go through gate.

Your dart is not for a few minutes. Whilst waiting for dart, you let 2 mins elapse, then tag 'out' - thus cancelling transaction.

You are now travelling for free. And if you live by a station which regularly has an open gate/unattended at night time, you can just walk out. Free fare?

Of course, if he was stopped on the dart by an inspector he'd be caught, yes? (Never seen inspector on a dart in my life - but ya never know!)

What's the trick they use with the Oyster in London?

I've had my leap card checked a few times and I only use the dart max once a week. I was checked just two weeks ago.

The inspector has a device which is able to read the last 5 actions directly from the card, so they'll see the touch ons, touch offs and be able to tell there was touch on for the current journey. If one was to do, as you figured.

As you describe it then yes it is possible. Where you to try it you would need to know about this window, time up the 180 second window to do it and be traveling to the right station with open gates. A fair bit to do to save a couple of euro, isn't it?

Would Leap's monitoring freeze a card if it saw it happening on a more than occasional basis?

In London they tag on with Oyster at the entry gate, and then tag off at the exit gate of the station a few seconds later, they're then not charged the full amount for the journey.

Revenue can spot the suspicious data pattern fairly easily and can identify you via CCTV if you do this frequently at the same station.
