Cold start issue - Hilux

    Hello wise ones :D

Thanks to mr DOE man, I've just had to spend €400 to sort airbag issue and others on my 06 Hilux. I've also just put the winter boots on (makes a massive difference), which I do every year as I live on high ground and MUST get out in all conditions. And fitted a bargain second hand mountain top, which I picked up on Donedeal, as the canopy was badly leaking and knackered.

So now my lovely Hilux looks and drives like new, very pleased with my efforts

Anyway here's my problem, which I can't seem to figure out.
She starts on the button every time, except when cold, such as this morning.
Turn the key, starts she does, but then dies a few seconds later.
Turn the key again and she will keep turning over for 15-20 sec before she fires. This problem seems to be worse, the colder it is.
I've changed all filters (having picked up dirty fuel somewhere )
But the problem still persists, again only on cold days. The heater seems to be working, and needless to say I always give the light a chance to go out before starting.

Any thoughts on the above from the "wise ones" would be much appreciated.
I'm reasonably handy at working on same, but could just do with a few ideas.

could be glowplug .. to see if there are working take them out and make up a 12v supply to them and see if they glow red hot.that what i did to a corolla ......if you do that use the nut part for the +wire and the body for - wire

It's most likely what Navara Man says, glowplug problems. If not the plugs themselves it could be the relay that operates them.

The other possibility on a modern engine is a failed air temp sensor so the ECU may not realise the glowplugs need to be used.

Check the obvious first and if you can't find a problem, get it plugged in and see if there's faults.

Thank you both very much for taking the time to post.
Seems like the most likely answer, and I will chase it up over the weekend.

    Once again, thanks ;)

Change your diesel supplier and see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like water in the fuel to me, if its starting first, then dies. It could be possible that water in the fuel is freezing. Possibly inside the fuel filter.

Just a thought, I'd drain the tank and replace the filter then go from there.

If its starting for a few seconds, its unlikely to be the glow plugs....

I have similar problems with my ssyongyong kyron , have tried most things and finally had to face facts and do a leak off test and it its the injectors . Hopefully its a fuel problem with yours , but its so frustrating for you to run the machine all day with no probs and for it not to start in the morning . Am looking at about 130 euro per injector . If anyone can beat that price please share . Hope you get sorted .

Checked plugs there this morning, and all fine.

Filter shows no sign of water or further dirt, but will try to get the tank drained this weekend and see whats what.

    As always, thanks again ;)

    GLOW-PLUGS

make sure you dont snap them when taking them out and replacing them.

if you snap one, then its a head off job to get if from the underside.
