Rain followed by freezing temps last night. The roads look wet but I can see sparkly bits everywhere. Take it easy this morning folks

Bike was left at home today. That's more because I've had 5 punctures in 4 weeks than the ice though. Honest.

Nearly went on my snot walking to the bus stop though.

Cycle lanes and most of the bus lanes were not usable this morning. Think I need to put the knoblies on the mtb and park the road bike until these ice rink conditions are over.

Clonee towards blanchardstown was very bad this morning at a little before 7. I had the studded tires on the CX. I am INVINCIBLE! ... but slow.

Take care around Poddle Park / KCR in Kimmage. three cyclists and a person on a scooter went flying this morning in the space of 20m.

No problems for me this morning on 700CX25. It didn't look that cold but my hands felt like I'd been out playing in the snow for 3 hours without gloves by the time I got to work

funny thing these last couple of days, I'm going on a 7:30 and seeing no sign of ice, yet people are reporting a lot of ice later - seems to be that the temp is dropping just before the sun comes up?

TBH the fear of ice is worse than the ice itself for me ...

Clear skies at this time of year in these latitudes means that the temperature really only starts rising with direct sunlight. When it's cloudier the temp will start rising earlier as the heat is trapped.
In ice terms, it's literally darkest before the dawn as this is when the ice has had the maximum amount of time to freeze over.

Spikey MTB for me this morning, sparkly roads but don't think it was very slippy. Saw a couple of iced-over puddles along the very edge though, but otherwise was very normal, if slow, commute.... although a colleague came off very close to the office. I laughed at him just as he did at me last week, great to see Karma biting back :D

No problems from Greystones to D1 at 7.30 this morning. No skids, slips or slides thankfully!

Thanks to all posters for the ice reports. I check this thread in the morning to see how road conditions are. Can't afford a spill to effect my training for the 12 pubs of Christmas ;)
    Keep up the good work!

Malahide to City Centre not too bad on underinflated 1.75" regular tyres. No real slips or slides. More ice than I've seen in the past few days but only from frozen puddles - I didn't see any extended stretches Took it handy all the same.

Do we think this cold snap is forecast to last much longer? I have a pair of them schwalbe marathon winters in my shopping cart on wiggle, if I proceed with payment I have no doubt average temps will rise by ~5 degrees!

Lots of ice on the red cow cycle path. Poor guy heading the other way came off three times. I skidded even with studded tyres on the mtb.

Next week is looking worse based on current charts, however, they may and probably will change.

I had planned on going on the bus this morning and was glad that I did. Very slippy roads and paths on both ends of my cycle.

Regarding the Marathon Winter tyres, how good are they for mornings like today? I'm not talking about snow, just random spots of ice around the place. I'm usually on my Cayo with 700x23c on it but I have my old Sirrus in the shed that I could stick bigger tyres onto - e.g. 700x28. Wiggle says "Even in tight bends and under violent braking everything remains under control." Is this written with mornings like today in mind?

One other question, my usual commute is 2 x 25km x 4 days per week. Would that make mincemeat of the studs on these tyres? I could perhaps justify a pair if it would make cycling possible, but not if I'm only going to get a month or two out of them.

FWIW, you can get a set of schwalbe winter touring in 700x30 for just over 50 quid - 60 inc delivery.
That's just over 3 weeks on the bus assuming 4 euro a day - I've no idea how much a weekly pass or anything is though

Marathon Winter tyres are perfectly secure and the studs last ages. If I have a criticism it's that they're slow, noisy and corner oddly.

You need the clearance though, 35mm is the narrowest they do.
