Hi all, I always wanted to become a garda ever since I was young. I am currently 21 and will be finishing my degree this year- B.A irish and French. Did this degree in the first place as I thought having a degree in irish would be handy when entering the force. I have applied for the garda reserves a few months ago but heard nothing yet. Now i will be finishing up my degree but am unsure whats the next best step. I was thinking of doing the h-dip so that I have secondary teaching as a back up plan but im set on becoming a garda so was wondering is there anything that would really make me stand out? Any specific courses or the likes?

Well your getting a degree which is brilliant. Try a first aid course or lifesaving course.

I joined the reserves to gain experience in policing so when I go for full time ill actually have some notion of what ill be talking about. Im in college too trying to get a degree ... "Trying"... but some things are not meant to be. I did a two year course in Cork College of commerce too in police and security studies which I found interesting. Its a level 5 and 6.

Joining the reserves though would be good because itl help you get some experience in AGS and for anyone who wants full time they generally like it. It may be another while before they recruit its the closest you can get into AGS at the present time. Id reccomend it for anyone intrested.

Oh and the myth of full timers hating us....Lets just say it comes down to the person you are and the bonds you make..some dont like the idea others do but most give you a fair chance and you can make some very good friends there.

    Hi Tyson Jara,

Your posts are very helpful and informative.

Keep going for that masters lol. Id join some voluntary service like civil defense or the RNLI or do something that way.(If you can not everyone is able too). Reserves is a good way to go as its voluntary and you get an insight into garda life. Its something that takes time to get into. Say if you apply today it could be two years before you get into phase 1 or it could be less. varies for us all.

Im a reserve and that's the path I took to begin my career and its one of the best decisions Ive ever made. There might be others out there who have other ideas of what to do.

    apply for the Garda Reserve

You will get active policing experience

most members of the existing Garda panel wont even have that

youll be streets ahead of most

it ticks all the boxes - policing experience, volunteering, working in your community, working in a team etc

Whever recruitment starts again it will be very competitive because even with changes in rosters, pay etc a lot of people are attracted to police work. The vast majority of applicants in recent years have some third level qualification and anyone hoping for promotion will have to have a degree.

In the meantime before recruitment recommences I would certainly recommend the Reserve as it shows a commitment, gives you an advantage over others. As regards relationship with full timers most Gardai realise that changes have to occur. If you have a friendly personality and are prepared to cooperate and not think you know all you will get on grand.
