I was wondering what the percentage was in Ireland and in Europe, and why there isn't more focus on communication between the hearing and the deaf world? How easy/difficult would it be to introduce sign language in primary schools, considering it helps with learning language. Obviously lack of practice would mean losing sign language over time but I just can't fathom there being a parallel community of people that seems unreachable to me. I'm sure it doesn't seem so to some, but it feels that way to me.

Unfortunately, sign language is not a recognised language in Ireland... Yet.

That's crazy! Anyway, learning new languages isn't the focus of many schools and that's a shame.

Check the Census results on the CSO website for more details of the actual percentages.
