Advice on picking a bike

Still on the lookout for a bike but could do with some advice. I'm starting fresh, haven't owned a bike in about 10 yrs, have 3 yrs experience on bikes from years ago.

So, what I really want is a sports bike, but insurance wont allow. I had sort of decided on a Kawasaki Z750/750r(current model) - anyone have experience with them..asking around on various forums one guy that says he has owned close to 100 bikes says it was the worst he ever had, another lad couldn't say enough positive things about it. I like the look of its aggressive styling , and have read positive reviews but don't know much beyond that. Other options are an sv650 or hornet 600 but they don't do it for me in the looks department.

I owned a yamaha dt125 and it was great fun, so I'm also open to the likes of KTM 690 sm or similar. Do KTM bikes require more regular servicing /specialist servicing, or is there anything I should be aware of with them? Really like the look of them but don't want something that has to be looked after like a baby - owned an Aprila RS125 , lots of fun but I wouldn't go there again, too much hassle.

Any opinions on those 2 bikes or alternatives welcome, thanks.

I've a 05 Z750. It's a great bike, not a bit of bother with it, and once you know the limitations of it's budget suspension you learn where it can and can't be pushed. I took it to the Alps last year and the only complaint was the seat, which is crap, so I bought an after market one.

Not sure about the current gen, but have a look here for more info.

If your going for an SV try an get one that has been converted to a Gix front end. It will make a world of difference to the bike.
