These clear mornings at dawn, it brightens to the stage that there are just 2 objects visible in the sky: one is in the east, the other in the west. One of them, I know, is venus: what is the other one ?

Does venus appear in the east in the mornings?

I should apologise for asking such a basic question!

Well done on spotting those planets in the morning sky Poulgorm ... my view out the house windows is obstructed by trees and other buildings so I really lament not having a nice horizon these mornings.

No such thing as a basic question as we all had to start somewhere learning the sky!

The other planet in the western morning sky is Jupiter and you are correct in saying that Venus is in the east. A smart phone app should let you identify both and also the free Stellarium software. Check out the December sky notes in my other thread for opportunities to spot Mercury and Saturn too!

    Clear skies!

    John

Jupiter in the West, Venus in the East.

Just beside Venus, Saturn. Halfway to the horizon, Mercury.

But the bright ones are Jupiter and Venus.

Am I right in thinking Mars was hanging around Venus too?

No, Mars is up (just) after sunset, not before sunrise.
