New licenses - confussed

    RSA states the following:
    NOTE: The new plastic card licence will only be available to those who;

have passed their driving test and are applying for their first driver licence on or after 19 January 2013
who are renewing their learner permit/ driver licence on or after 19 January 2013
who are exchanging a foreign driver licence for an Irish driver licence on or after 19 January 2013.

Does that mean that in following circumstances old style paper licence will be issued:
    - change of name or address
    - adding category to licence
    - applying for replacement if licence is lost or stolen
    - correcting an error in current licence
    - removing of endorsement

    http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Licensed-Drivers/Driving-licence/Driving-Licence-Changes-January-2013/

I know that RSA is known from making mistakes and giving false informations, but this is actually a thing which will apply to thousands of drivers. Accurate information would be nice.

My paper licence expires next year.

You can apply for licence renewal 3 months in advance, so in theory if you licence expires before 19th April 2013, you can apply before 19th January 2013, and get old paper licence.
    But that's in theory ;)

I wouldnt have thought that they would continue issuing both, but nothing would surprise me!

I was fully planning on losing my license in January as well...

Do people not just leave the licence in the car?

If you want ID the Garda ID system is there. Novelty.

Yeah it will be handy there all right but 99% of people don't have that problem.

i think 99% as a figure would be wrong there.

all different kind of people from people who own two cars, company cars, working driving the company van (e.g. dhl, etc who use their own cars to get there,) truck drivers and more.

Would "majority" work better for you so Robbie? I swing from motor to motor and taking my licence out isn't a big deal..... For the rest of the time, it lives in my car.

just saying.... the way it's made out is that only a small few people need it when it's a lot more if you count every truck on the road (I don't think they take them home full time) post vans, coaches and private buses and the likes. mechanics taking a customers car and so on.

but hey I'll leave my license in the wallet of the garda don't mind that the thing is badly damaged.

Mine is always in my wallet and doesn't get in the way. Don't see the big deal either way.

Edit - also is in plastic and undamaged / unworn.

Just to counter this mine used to live in my wallet and literally disintegrated in the space of about two years. Depends on the wallet I guess!

Doesn't work if you are in and out of multiple cars, or in my case if you work with clients who insist on having either a passport or driving licence presented anytime you go onsite.

Mine is in my wallet, and is in bits.

It might accidentally get shredded in the washing machine come January

Nice wan, my licence was stolen a while back, I'll hold off replacing it til January and hope to God I don't get pulled for anything in the meantime.

I'll just be happy to not get sniggered at any time I leave the country and am asked to produce my driving licence. It's liking pulling out one of those African passports that are still hand written and have the picture glued in.

Never had that experience, people still have paper licenses in other EU Countries.

Theoretically you'd not be guaranteed a plastic replacement. But, I doubt they'll operate a second system for long after 19-01-2013.

Same As. I've been searching everywhere for a wallet large enough for the licence (my Dad had one for years), but can't find one. I think they started making wallets smaller when the smaller euro notes came in. :D Maybe one could get a bigger wallet in the UK.

This is probably a short-term measure to stop the tax offices from being overwhelmed with requests to swap out the licence. They will probably start silently allowing people to exchange them after five years or so.

    I never had this problem.
While I moved from Poland to Ireland I replaced my plastic licence for Irish paper one and needed a space in my wallet.
But on the other hand there was a space in my wallet released from my registration certificate which in Poland is in shape of Irish licence and must be carried at all times when driving a car.

Motor tax offices will be responsible for dealing with licences only until September 2013.
After that there will separate institution responsible for it, and possibly even renewing online might be possible from 2014.

Ah ok, I was thinking they'd class renewal and replacement as the same thing, but obviously not.

Bit stupid, really, considering that if your licence is stolen you have to have a report from the gardai before you can replace it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,467 ✭✭✭h3000

Surely they won't operate the paper licence for too long after they bring in the plastic one, but this is Ireland you'd never know.

I've an awful feeling my licence is due a trip to the washing machine in early February ;);)

The Garda ID wasn't available to >25s at one point, could easily be brought back to that age, and is still often seen as easily forgeable (not that a paper driving licence is any better). Its for teenagers to buy booze, not for adults to use to proof ID.

I'll be hanging onto my paper licence.

    nostalgia and all that

wallet? you need an a4 binder with the size of the fecking thing. :D
credit card size and it will finally be practical.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,102 ✭✭✭DylanII

I asked what would happen if you get a new category added to your licence or you loose/have your licence stolen.
    Dear Dylan,

The new card licence will be issued from 19th January 2013 onwards. All renewals or replacements on or after that date will be in the new format.

Nope, just checked, A4 is over 6 times larger.

I'm not lying and my wallet is not mental big or anything. It's nestled in there, in plastic thingy that it originally came in. A littlle curled at the very top from the opening and closing of the wallet, but otherwise pristine. I've had it for years.

Credit card size is obviously the way to go but weird to be getting excited by it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭bren50c

i wouldnt say im excited but just always found it an awkward size for my wallet. So ive kept it in the car but definitely will be handy in the wallet for when you need i.d. should have been that way from the start but presumably they saved a few quid with the paper ones vs printing plastic.

Does anybody know if a new application form is required and if that will be available before 19 Jan? I suppose there will be requirements regarding photo type and size etc.?
My license expires in early january and i would like to have the paperwork for the new licence ready, but not to submit it until after 19th. I will be out of the country and not driving in the period from the licence expiry to 19 Jan, but would like that the application is with the tax office when i get back (as i'll be driving then).

You shouldn't have any problem driving on an out-of-date licence for a few months. You can renew your licence provided the old one is not more than 10 years out of date...

Does a change or address count as a replacment or a renewal?

I changed my document for new one, because I was updating address. This was last year.
However I suspect that after new style licences are introduced, they might tell us that change of address is not a valid reason for licence exchange anymore.

I can't see that happening, tbh. It is in their interest to have a correct address on record.

Odds are there will be some biometric data embedded in the new licence as well. Has Run to da Hills been made aware of this thread yet? :)

I doubt it somehow as they are not valid as travel documents.

What if I change the address of my license, which is a free service?

Change it to my parents house and then change it back to my own home a few weeks later?

It will no longer be free under the new system.
