You don't know my sister, she'd have one of the lads do it. Thanks for your concern though.

I have a locking cap on mine. I use it all the time for peace of mind. For vandalism as much as theft. I suppose it will only slow them down but will make racket if they try to wedge it off.

They drilled my dads petrol tank and drained it. Happened in a hotel car park believe it or not..

do opels not have that anti siphoning device in the fuel filler pipe. my astra does anyway and it is a pain when i am filling it as when the car starts to get full the diesel just runs out even well before the pumps knocks itself off. I thought this device would make it hard to siphon fuel i could be wrong.

Is it not bloody difficult to open fuel flaps on modern cars without breaking them into bits? I know mine locks with the car and would need a crow bar to open.

I would have thought so. Anyway am working off second hand info will give it a closer look later.

Could be why they left empty handed (if that's what happened).

Bless you, maybe you should be more worried about getting a cough bottle rather than worrying about an open fuel cap

it could be as you cant actually stick a tube down my fuel filler as it just a metal insert with loads of holes around the sides which allows the diesel to drain in when filling up although it can be a pain sometimes.

    plastic tanks...

Yep, but drill motors can spark a bit. Can't say if it would ignite the petrol though.. need to give it a go to see...

I got a flat tyre one night last year on a dark road. There was an old car parked about 300m away from me and a garda car stopped and spent about 5 mins checking it out.As soon as they left, a guy who was hiding in the bushes climbed out carrying something which appeared to be heavy and loaded it into the boot.He then returned to his hiding place and came back with another similar item.I rang the Gardai and fair play the same car was back within a minute and they arrested yer man and took the stuff from the boot. The garda rang me later to say thanks and informed me that the guy was stealing diesel from cars and had over 100 litres in jerry cans in the car.

His car wasnt the only one to be done that night. According to the gardai it's fairly common. All the same an expensive thing to happen.

Doubt it. Fairly hard to light petrol. They'd probably use a small almost silent cordless screwdriver or a hand drill.

You ruined our Hollywood explosion scene....

I'm pretty sure that Mythbusters showed that shooting a petrol tank doesn't spark an explosion, or even ignition.

    This too shall pass.

Nope. Done it on both metal and plastic tanks.

    Our own stuff naturally ;)

How did they get the flap open if the car was locked?

It's some amount of work to take at max around €100 of fuel if they are lucky enough to come across a full tank, I really don't believe people have become this desperate. It's very easy in a modern car to accidentally hit the fuel cap release lever, most likely cause.
