Voluntary Work

Hi all, I was made redundant about 6 months ago and have since been minding the kids so effectively I am a stay at home dad. I have been looking for work without too much joy but as the wife is lucky enough to have a well paid job it is not essential that I get back into work just for the money. I basically have the mornings to myself when the children are at school so was thinking that my time could be better spent in voluntary work. I could work for 2 or 3 hours every day but am unsure which organisations I could approach, was thinking maybe Vincent de Paul, has anybody any other ideas? I have a number of years experience in supply chain / purchasing management, would any voluntary organisations benefit from this experience? I would also like to help people who are looking to start up new businesses but just need a bit of extra manpower and somebody to bounce ideas off.

    try www.volunteeringireland.ie

and there are other local sites too - not sure where you are located, but pop your county and "volunteering" into google and you should get a few sites like this:

    www.volunteerfingal.ie
    www.volunteerdlr.ie
    www.volunteermayo.ie

    etc etc

    good luck!

Where are you located? If it's anywhere near Galway, check these folks out: http://westofirelandnetworking.com/
Mainly for expereinced people looking for job or looking to start a business - the latter they could make use of bouncing ideas off you, and you would meet some interesting people thru it, and maybe get some ideas of what you would like to do.

There's something called Dublin Jobs Club in the big D: don't know if they have the self-employment focus though.

Re volunteering: IMHO, don't just do any old thing - unless your goal is simply to get out of the house.

Instead, ask yourself what are your values? What would you like to achieve? What area would you like to develop knowledge, skills and experience in? Is there anything you've always wanted to study?

Then look for non-profit agencies in the area, and talk to them opportunities that fit, so that both you and the organisation are getting something out of the deal.

You're far more like to enjoy and stick with the expereince that way, and to be able to cope with the inevitable training programme and Garda vetting that go with doing just about anything these days.

Excellent advice above, also try the volunteering section of activelink.ie. With your skills in logistics, would you think of something with a distribution side, like the red cross?

Fair play to you for going down this route...

SOSAD are always looking for people to volunteer...

My wife has had two qualified people come and volunteer in her department just to get the experience, she had hired both on part time basis for the moment so it definitely pays to get out there and give it a go..
