External Drive on laptop

My Sony Vaio external drive was working OK until a week ago when a message come up saying that I need to format it but do not want to do that as it may wipe off everything that I got store on it. I also get a message saying that the parameter is incorrect, how can I fix this on my vaio laptop please.
