Scrapping an old car any money in it?

I've an old running petrol 1.4 99 ford escort thats due to be scrapped in the next couple of weeks. Its NCTed untill Jan but sills are rusting out, it had a bit of welding for the last NCT, has rusty wheel arches and with 160k on the clock I can't see anyone rushing to buy it.

I asked about scrapping it at the local scrap yard about a year ago and the guy seemed very keen to get it for free and was doing me a big favour by doing it all legal which was a cost to him blah blah blah and I had to have an official doc from him to say it was scrapped but tbh it all sounded to pat and I wondered if there was enough in it for him to try and get some money back from scrapping the car?

I'd like to get rid of it sooner rather than later as if I do it in the next month I can just drive it wherever it needs to go.

    Are they particular on paperwork?

This is what the local scrap dealer went on about, I had to have a document to say I'd legally scrapped the car through a registered scrapper or it would come back and bite me, and he claimed the cost of him doing that was what the car was worth for scrap.

    I'm down near Wateford btw

The reason I ask is that I has a foreign yoke that cannot be registered here. I would rather scrap it than allow it to rot in the shed.

I'm looking to get rid of ours while I can still drive it, if it gets left in the yard for a couple of months I know I'll end up paying to have it taken away.

I have a 92 pug 106 that I need to scrap. The car is not driving so can anybody recommend somebody to scrap it for me?

There are plenty of people who will take them for nothing. My best mates brother is in the business of taking cars to scrap. He collects them and scraps. Did one for me and i'm sure he got around €150 for it. Didn't matter, as I was rid of it. He is in north Dub, pm me if you need details, but like i said, there are plenty out there who will do this for nothing and some who will pay you.

The two scrap yards I've called recently in Waterford don't want to give my anything - I must try harder :D

Just make sure you get the ELV cert from them or it will be up on donedeal for about 3 fiddy.

OP forget these certs. Any proper scrap dealer would give you at least E100 for it. Metal is worth money. If you're worried about a scrap man taking it off you, NOT giving you a cert, and selling it on again, get a consaw to it and make sure it wouldn't be worth his while. You will still get the value of its weight in scarp metal.

OP, you would be selling it to the scrapper or whoever buys it, just fill in the taxbook and send it off, not your prob anymore.... DON'T give it away...

What kind of condition is it in? I'm lookin for a corolla atm myself

my neighbour has a 97 polo, any idea wat that would be worth if I scrapped it? ...

    It's a 99 1.3 Terra Liftback

205k on the clock, in need of some suspension work and break discs. I suspect the clutch is on the way out and the timing belt is overdue. Unless you're a mechanic with access to a decent breakers yard, I doubt it's worth much to anyone for anything other than breaking. Tax'd until August 2013 and NCT'd until April or so... Can't see it being worth more than the €400 or so I'll get for it in a tax rebate and scrap though if you want to offer anything above that, I'm all ears!

    Feedback from the OP:

Did some research and called a few places and got offered nothing at some and €100 at others. I was going to drive the car to Paschal Power Nr Waterford 051878911 as he offered me €100 for car and would do the ELV cert for me.

Another thing I found was if you go to most county council websites they will list the authorised sites for getting rid of a vehicle at the end of its life. Those sites will provide the certs and might be a good starting point to call if your also looking for money.

In the end I gave the car away (still had tax and a months NCT) to a mate who was stuck with no car when his broke down. Decided it was easier to give him the car and send off the papers so he is now the owner as if I lent it to him and it went wrong I'd be the one sorting the problems out.
