Right so I have a deposit on a used car with a simi dealer in limerick, car just passed nct etc etc. No warranty on the car dealer said they dont offer warranties in that price bracket (1500) is there any need for me to get the car independently checked or should i take the dealers word for it that the car is in decent shape? I mean i'm by no means an expert but car was looking very well, clean oil, new timing belt, tyres. Opinions? Advice?

    Tis a 2001 astra btw.

Feck that, they are legally obliged to cover the car. And yes, I would most definitely get it checked out. If you don't know someone handy with cars, see if you can get a mechanic to take a peak.

    Are they? To what extent?

    Are they? To what extent?

They are pretty vague, here's what it says on CitizenInformation:
From a garage or car dealer
In this situation you, as a consumer, are protected by the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 as you are buying a car for your personal use from a person whose normal business it is to sell cars. As a consumer you have the same rights if you buy an item second hand as if it is new. In this case if you find a fault with the car after you have bought it the dealer is the person who must set matters right. If you buy a commercial vehicle or a tractor from a dealer you may not have the same protection under the law. If you are offered an extended warranty on a used car think about the cost of the warranty versus the cost of repairs that the car is likely to need.

Sellers have responsibilities such as giving accurate and truthful answers to the questions you ask. Information on a seller's responsibilities in car deals is available on the National Consumer Agency's website
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/consumer_affairs/motoring/advice_on_buying_a_used_car_in_ireland.html

No mention of the extent of a warranty, but you are covered under the sale of good and supply of services act

Thanks for that .... should I mention this to the dealer now or will i purchase the car and if anything does go wrong go back to them and cite the sale of goods and supply of services act?

Lets be straight, if he says he won't cover the car before you've even paid for it, you haven't a chance of cover if something goes wrong

treat it as a private sale with no comeback or find something else.

Tbh, it's an Astra, there's a tonne of them around, plenty honest private sale cars. I would just walk if that was the attitude of the dealer being honest.

That's what I was getting at.

Im at the stage now where I'm sick and tired of searching walked away several times already, ill pay the few quid for a mechanic to look it over and if all is well I'll go for it, at that price i've a nice cushion if i do encounter some problems (god forbid) :)

€1500 for a 2001 1.4 Astra is less than value imo.

Realistically at this price, the dealer won't be coining it profit wise, he won't want to fork out for a head gasket or whatever, just find the best car you can for the money, one with lots of service history and buy from the owner, that gives you a much better feel for the car and how its been treated.

Do you need to buy very soon or do you have a car at the mo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 583 ✭✭✭patakadarragh

Well at the moment i'm without transport so yes
One of our cars has just been sold

The whole point of buying from a garage is for the peace of mind in the form of a warranty. If there is no warranty (which I wouldn't expect on a €1500 nearly 12 year old Astra) then I don't see the point in paying dealer prices for something that can be bought from a private seller.

Well other option that i'm seriously considering is a 1.4 golf of the same year, but for 800 more and at the same mileage from a dealer offering a 3 month engine and gearbox warranty. Heard stories of golfs burning oil and being unreliable but i guess you can hear stories about any car. If im honest the astra was a cleaner car better body and that, finding it hard to justify the extra money for the golf so put the deposit on the astra instead.

    €2300 for a 2001 1.4 Golf
    Don't buy that anyway.

I offered the guy an opinion over the last few days in a different thread :)
I feel no need to repeat it here, if you are as interested as you appear to be there is a search function on boards.ie, ask nicely and someone might tell you how to use it if you can't quite figure it out yourself :)

    Update:
So i arranged for an independent mechanic to take a look at the car, he did so said everything was the finest and in good nick except for a small problem with the headlamps brackets, and a small oil leak, mechanic said both were nothing major (tis 12 years old afterall) and we asked the dealer would he sort it out, he said he would no problem, collecting the car tomorrow, very happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Don't collect it unless these are resolved. You'll have no way of knowing about the leak, broken headlamp lugs usually mean the car was smacked,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 583 ✭✭✭patakadarragh

Been assured will be fixed by tomorrow evening, yeah the mechanic said that to me.

No such thing as an unwarranted "trade" sale these days, so feck him and his "no warranty". You're covered by consumer law and the goods have to be "fit for purpose". The days of "sold as seen" only exist at auctions and in the day dreams of cowboy car dealers.

    ....new timing belt....Opinions? Advice?

May be too late to ask now, but does the dealer have proof of that? If not, I'd want a warranty on that at least. Otherwise the only way you'll have piece of mind is to have it done yourself as soon as you get the car. It's very critical on that car, if I remember correctly the interval was revised a few times by Opel due to early belt failures.

Mechanic gave a look at it, he said its fine. I heard it was an issue alright that's why i asked the mechanic specifically.

and private sales, or maybe even sales by dealers posing as private sellers.
