Just seen American Golf have them at £129. They have stores in Ireland and at current exchange rates that transfers to about €160. If the Irish store is charging more you could try and talk them down on this basis.

Long shot but might be worth a try.

That is where I saw the price, just got an email from the Tallaght shop offering it to me for €159, great price actually less than £129. @ 0.80 exch rate!

I had a Garmin S1 for 11 months until it was stolen 2 weeks ago.

It was a dream product to use with the exception that not all the courses I happened to play this year were mapped by Garmin.

I was thinking off replacing the S1 with a Bushnell Neo+ GPS Watch as there are more courses included plus it works outside Europe but I really liked the S1 and I know it works accurately, so I am not entirely sure should I jump to the Bushnell.

    .

That sucks, how was it stolen? Did you tie it to your bag and some low life swiped it from your bag when you weren't standing guard over it? If you've the golfsure as part of your membership it would be worth looking into seeing if the insurance will cover a replacement.

I was getting my trolly, bag etc out of the car and put the watch into my pocket. I then walked from the car park to the mens changing room and the first item I reached for before changing was the watch which was not in my pocket. As it had only been 3 minutes since I placed it in my pocket, I walked stright back out looking for it and no sign. I puilled my car, golf bag, changing bag, shoe bags etc apart for the next 2 hours to no avail. I still cannot believe that I was the victim of such an opportunistic theft, whoever lifted it had such only max 120 seconds from the time I dropped it until I returned looking for it.

I was very fond of the watch and perversely bought it as one of the initial reviews mentioned that the candy bar GPS devices are easy to lose or be stolen.

Thanks for the heads up, I rang the club and the broker is sending me a claim form but he mentioned if approved it will be nett off whatever excess but it will help me get over the loss so thank you again.

Such a sorry tale, I have left mine in the changing room twice when taking a shower and was in the bar before I realised I had left it behind, they are not showerproof!
One suggestion might be worth a chance, have you updated it online with Garmin? , if so they have the metadata of your watch. Could be they can trace it!

It is such a simple sweet device, which I much prefer to any bag/trolley mounted/stored alternatives, just a glance and you are all set.

    Cheers

Thanks Peter, I am struggling to just accept the watch is gone because I liked it so much, using a watch as a GPS appealed to me but I had no idea the Garmin S1 would be as good as it was, except for the 3 courses I played which were not mapped.

The watch is a GPS receiver, to trace would it not have have to transmit a GPS signal? I certainly did update it several times and registered it on Garmin website. How would I investigate this further?

I had hoped the watch would be returned to the club and put up some LOST posters as I thought whoever took would not have the unique charging clip but then I saw that they can now be ordered now independently of the watch.

You clearly liked the S1 as much as I did, what does everyone think of me moving to the Bushnell Neo watch for access to more courses?

The Bushnell does not look as good but allegedly has a better battery life, easier charging and more courses.

Does anyone have experience of the Bushnell Neo watch?

Email Garmin and explain your predicament with the date is was "lost", they will know if it has been connected to the site since. A bit of a tenuous hope I know, but worth a shot. I emailed them about a software fix for dealing with my course which is 3 x 9 holes and the promised to fix it with the October update, they did!

I think the display and look of the Busnell as inferior but have only found one course this year that was not mapped on the S1 which really surprised me, the Old Tom Morris at Rosapenna while on my hols in Donegal.

    Cheers

Does anyone know how you request Garmin to add a certain course?

I got the Garmin S3 watch. I agree its a great product. Definitely one of my best purchases. Its very handy to have the distances on your wrist at all times instead of a seperate GPS devise.

I dont know if the courses for the S1 and the S3 are the same. I presume they are ? I have yet to encounter a course thats not on my S3. I played one course recently that wasnt on it but when i went home i checked the site it was there. I just hadnt updated my watch.

    Great product

    Hi
Just another query on the garmin watch. I was going to buy one as a gift is the display quite big would you see the distance easy without glasses ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 94 ✭✭whitefoot

Yes, I also wear reading glasses and the Garmin S1 can easily be read without glasses. If you can read a normal digital watch unaided you can read the Garmin watch.

Another advantage to the Garmin S1 as a GPS is the same simple information is constantly presented in the same way so you do not have to orientate yourself as you do with the candy bard Golf Buddy to check what sort of information is it telling me now, which can be a challenge for the long sighted.

I would agree that the main courses that you would actually want to play are on the Garmin, I only got caught out in Society golf on 3 courses that I could not see myself playing frequently, Knightsbrook Meath, Ardee Louth and Greenore Louth.

I know it's not exactly FairPlay but hardly matches my definition of stolen.

You lost it and it wasn't returned. Whoever came along did hardly know you just only dropped it a minute ago did they?

Absolutely no bother, I wear reading glasses for newspaper and computer but the numerals on the watch are easily big enough with no glasses. My guess is at least 3 times taller than this text here and much bolder.

Guys, the Garmin S1 watch I have is not recognising courses of any kind no matter what golf course I am standing on.

Has any one else experienced a similar issue and if so what is the best way to rectify?

Did you try turning it off and turning it back on again ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,174 ✭✭✭opinionated3

If that doesn't work go to mygarmin.com and update your watch software. ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭morrga

Yes tried the reset option and still no better. Will try the update option next, thanks.
