I'm working on a short story involving a character who has been sentenced to a long period (200+ hours ) of Community Service.

What sort of crime would merit this sentence and in what level of court would it be heard? For the sake of the story the crime can't involve any physical violence or fraud.

All I know about the bonkers system we have here is the person would have had to have been looking at a custodial sentence before community service can be given as a punishment. Simply bonkers imho. I sincerely hope I've picked this up wrong and someone will correct me.

Any court can give a custodial sentence even the District Court.

I used to work for charity and we used get young lads and the odd girl sent in to us to do their community service.Their offences always seemed to be very minor , drunk and disorderly etc telling gardai to fcuk off and possession of small amounts off cannabis.
Nearly all of them seemed to be decent kids and all were supervised by a probation officer ( I could be wrong on his title ).
240 hours was the max they used get.
Their supervisor treated them very well and they all respected him for it.He was on first names terms with them all too.

Could be anything though OP - wasn't 200 hours the sentence for possession of Child Pornography, albeit at the lower end of the UCC scale?

    PERFECT! Thank you.

'Twould be a little harsh for that if your subject has no previous convictions.

Through in a criminal damage charge contrary to Section 2 Criminal Damage Act 1991 perhaps.
