Climate Control Unit not working

    Hi all,

    I've a 02 BMW 320D E46.

A few weeks ago the blower heater stopped working. However the the back screen demister & air con light continued to light up

A day later the entire climate control unit stopped working - no lights at all. All fuses are fine. After some research online it became clear to us that the blower heater resistor commonly goes on this model. We went about replacing this but there is no power even going to the resistor itself. We even changed the climate control unit itself but no joy. (picked it up at a breakers)

I'm unsure as to where to go from here. Any suggestions? It's starting to get a bit chilly without a blower heater!

Pic of climate control unit attached.

It's possible that the replacement unit from the breakers was bad, but unlikely.

Just from experience it would have been best to pay a main dealer the €100 odd euro to tell you exactly what the problem was before you spend a penny. At this stage before you spend any more money or time take it to bmw and they should tell you exactly what's wrong. You don't need to get them to fix it. Just get the part numbers you need.

using the call of duty disc to try and clear your window is the issue, replace with actual air con!!!

Id agree with heading to a garage who knows about this to properly diagnose

Yes going to a main dealer is an option. But "go to your main dealer" can be an answer given to most questions asked on this forum.

Likemany others on this forum we like to work on our own cars and seek help from the collective knowledge on these pages.

Thanks for your input all the same.

The reason I said main dealer as my last problem with the e46 2 garages wanted me to replace parts that weren't necessary and was nearly costing me over €1000, took it to bmw 150 for troubleshooting and 150 for part. Both the Indy garages had tools for reading fault codes for bmw but to be quite honest they can't read them properly only bmw can.
You've already spent money for nothing, up to yourself but I've seen my dad learn some hard Lessons by not letting the right people at the car first time.

On the E46 on the drivers side near the pedels there is a resistor for the heater, climate control, air con units.

You can buy a new one and you will have your heater & climate control unit back working.

As previous poster stated, it is most likely the fan speed resistor/transistor ,more commonly known as the hedgehog resistor, check out bmw-driver.net/forum for how to's for a method ot testing each component.

As per my first post we tried replacing the resistor but had no joy. also there is no power going to the resistor suggesting a fault elsewhere.

Sorry OP can't help in any way with your query but I'd love to meet the tight git that originally ordered your car in 2002 with a tape deck:eek:

pedantic, but wtf, your car doesn't have climate control?

Also, a tape player in a 'prestige' car in 2002 -dang!

    Car has climate control ;)

Also whats wrong with a tape deck in a 02 prestige car as my one has the tape deck around there and the 6 disk cd changer in the booth ;)

Well considering that CD was a not so youthful 22 years old in 2002 it's pretty lame to see it predecessor fit in what was a new, 'high-end' car at the time.

As for the climate contol system: that's the most manual-ass looking climate control system I've ever seen!?

I actually agree that is not a climate control unit,
Climate control is usUally controlling both sides ofthe car with digital temp. One final thing i suggest is your take the plastic cover off where the pollen filter goes and see are you getting power at the fan
