    Started today

None of the irish started well.

I don't like that over 2 courses on same day. I'd prefer everyone play the same course on the same day so level playing field.

use 2 courses but on different days.

to much involved where you could get the hard course on a brutal day while other course might not get the as tough conditions even on the same land

I agree with you. Luck of the draw could be a factor here which isn't fully fair for something that is so big and can either make or break a career

:) Great round by Higgins today

they all play two rounds on each course, so it levels itself out over the four days

Not really as conditions could be totally different on each course on the same

Have to agree, at least have them all on the same course on the same day.

The Leaderboard tells the same story Top 50 are all on Tour Course today  Look at the scores on the Stadium course - quality players scoring high - Bradley Dredge 75, Carlos Aguilar 77, Rhys Davies 74

    Fingers crossed for David Higgins

I didn't even realise Rhys Davies was there, surprised at that. Thought he would have enough quality to be safe of his card

Nick Dougherty in 152nd place out of 156 players, future not looking good for him at this stage

David Higgins the only Irish player to make it to rounds 5 and 6.
Best of luck to him next couple of days.

Bradley Dredge (2nd Irish open 2007) and Nick Dougherty (4th Irish Open 2009) both missing the cut. I recall watching Michael Lorenzo Vera and Paul Broadhurst at Baltray in 2009 as well - they also missed the cut.

Other notables and ex tour winners to miss out include Jarmo Sandelin, Rhys Davies, as mentioned, Kenny Ferrie, 2010 US Am champ Peter Uihlein, Phil Archer, Oskar Henningsson, Pablo Martin and twice British Open participant Zane Scotland.

    Tough gig.

Nick Dougherty's fall from the top is somewhat unbelievable, he won 3 European Tour events. Does anyone know is it lack of practice or just hasn't had the breaks?

Peter Uihlein really has not lived up to his billing when he burst onto the scene, I don't know if Europe was the right option for him to be honest.

Pablo Martin is also a double winner on tour too - I thought you got an exemption for winning?

I remember earlier this year Dougherty was interviewed after a rare good round, something like a 66 or 67 somewhere. He basically spilled and talked about how terrible he'd been playing and the awful time he'd been having and hopefully he'd turned a corner. Played woeful the next day again. Sad for him. It's easy to slag him off but he genuinely seems a nice fella, to me anyway. Hit the ball great around Baltray in 2009 as well.

His last win was in 2010. You get a two year exemption so presumably that was 2011 and 2012 and he hasn't done enough this year for 2013. Looked like being a big player at one stage. Maybe he still will in fairness.

I think its easier to win on the European tour than it would have been for him to win on the PGA tour in fairness.

When Henrik Stenson won the SA Open on Nov 18th last, the European Tour website said that he thereby 'Gains a European Tour exemption until the end of the 2013 season'

    http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2012/tournamentid=2012098/news/newsid=179646.html#with+this+henrik+stenson

When Miguel Angel Jiminez won the Hong Kong Open on the same day, it was his first European Tour victory since 2010 but the win 'Extends his European Tour exemption until the end of 2014.'

    http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2012/tournamentid=2012090/news/newsid=179549.html#with+this+miguel+angel+jimenez

Could someone explain the system of exemptions based on recent victories on the European Tour please? No need to cover the majors.

Greebo I don't think you have any justification for that tbh, I would think it would be easier for him to play better in conditions that he is used to on courses that he is used to playing on!

higgins on the bubble at -5 with 27 holes to go.

some serious pressure on the chap. wish him all the best.

I'd agree with Greebo. Ian Poulter, Paul Casey, Luke Donald & Justin Rose has won more times in Europe than America despite playing most of their golf over their. Monty never won in America despite dominating in Europe (granted he played less in the US). Even Ernie Els plays more often in the US yet has more wins in Europe...

(probably a bit off topic... apologies)

The European tour could be facing a bit of a crisis, I think you could see it in George O'Gradys face on Sunday in Dubai.

All of the big players are committing to the US. Out of the top 50 in the world, I can only imagine only a handful are European tour professionals.

O'Grady was saying he considered the European pros in America to be ambassadors for the European tour. Not great ambassadors if they only play 1-2 continental European events per year. Doubt the sponsor of the Spanish/French/Italian open is too happy about the situation.

I agree that its not good for the European Tour to have so many of the big names heading to the US....but....this makes way for some new faces to hit the highs of contending or winning a European Tour event.
At first there won't be the draw to them like there is to Tiger / Rory etc. but it gives some of the fringe players a chance.

The big problem I see with this is there will most likely be a drop in spectators and sponsorship therefore a reduction in prizemoney (and even WGR points)

Birdie at 13 as well to -7 :), so tied 16th.

    6 players tied 24th at -5.

So -6 is worst you want to be for comfort!

    Delighted for David,
grew up playing kerry junior league golf with him and played on the same kerry junior team as him(quite a few years ago now:o) but he's always remained the same nice guy he was all those years back,
hopefully he can go on now and enjoy the success that this incredibly talented and genuinely nice guy deserves:)

Great work by the soon to be 40 year old!

Spare a thought for George Murray. Three putted the last from 12 feet, including lipping a two footer when he thought he was already out. He would have got his card with the two foot putt.

    heartbreaking stuff.

Slightly off topic but David Higgins came second in the PGA play offs in Turkey.

This will get him into some of the bigger European tour events next year that his current status wouldn't.

Also gets him into the G.B & Ireland PGA Cup team to play the United States at Slaley Hall next September.

GB & Ireland have only won it once out of the last 13 meetings. That was in the "K club" in 2005.

    Exciting year ahead for David.
