My boyfriend was 6 weeks out of work and thankfully got work but he signed on anyway and applied for Job Seekers Allowance. 2012 is based on 2010 contributions and he only moved over from the UK in April 2010 so he fell short, but because of him paying PRSI in the UK he is entitled to the job seekers allowance.(or so they say!)

They have sent a form off to the UK social welfare for confirmation i guessand we are still waiting to find out if/when he will be backdated.... Has anyone had any experience of doing this??

Do you know how much longer we should expect to wait???

Why the backlog? Taxpayers pay their taxes every month/week!!

He can apply for jsa anytime but this is subject to a means test and habitual residence criteria. What you are talking about is jobseekers benefit and his contributions from the uk can be used for him being entitled to having an jobseekers benefit entitlement once he has paid 1 "a" contribution in Ireland. Sw have to send off the form to Newcastle for confirmation of his contributions paid in the uk and wait for this to be returned... this can take anything up to 2 months or more... depends on how quickly this is processed in the UK so maybe you should take the backlog question up with the authorities in the UK.

Thank you eastbono, and yes my mistake I meant to say jobseekers benefit. I am doing some online research and I can't seem to find a contact for Newcastle. It keeps being redirected to "your local job centre"

His local job centre is not gonna help!!

Last year around this time I wrote to a Jobcentre in Bristol on behalf of a chap requesting his NI history, or some documentary evidence that he had been in receipt of DHSS benefits. (Bristol was the last place he lived in the UK)
Im still waiting for a reply, and the poor chap has died in the meantime.
So i wouldnt hold out much hope of hearing anything any time soon.
Your fella should go back to the SW office and make a claim for JSA, but as eastbono says he will have to prove HRC and undergo a means test.

Thank you mrsbyrne for your response, and sorry to hear about that poor fella.

My Boyf is not entitled to JSA because he lives in my house and they means tested him already. Guess we were too honest for the system! Should have lied. He is holding out for it to be backdated (fingers crossed)

Thank you eastbono for the number, much appreciated! Hopefully it doesn't take too long, seems madness the delay, really does!

I am in a similar situation, having returned from the UK a year ago. I applied for JSB in May and am still waiting to hear back about a decision. The UK lost my forms first and then required more info.
I am hoping (???) to hear back before Christmas

Hi all, got good news. From being unemployed 4.5 weeks he got a call yesterday to say he had been 'awarded' with the JSB and will be backdated the 4.5 weeks and it will be sent out in a cheque to him.

Leelee77 the best thing I would recommend for you to do is keep on at the social welfare, my boyf went there every week to constantly ask them. Keep on their backs! Unbelievable that they lost your forms!!! Unbelievable! Peoples lives rely on JSB so much when they are out of work.

Thanks for that Sinead. I will get on to them now. It is so unprofessional. I couldn't believe it.
