Been looking at these on Carzone. They all seem to come with a 2.5 litre engine. Apart from the changes in body shape and size, are there any other differences between them, particularly around performance?

They are 3 different models with a variety of engines aimed at different segments of the market. Similar to an Audi A3, A4 and A6 are different models competing in different segments.

S40 is based on the Ford Focus and was aimed at the junior executive market but more similar in size to the likes of the A3. Engines range from 1.6 litre upto 2.5 litre, petrol and diesel. Anything over 2.0 litre is rare here. The S40 has now been replaced by the new V40 hatchback.

S60 is newer and more similar in size to the likes of an A4 or 3 Series. Again engines range from 1.6 litre to 2.4 litre petrol and diesel.

S80 was aimed at the likes of the 5 Series/A6 but was a bit smaller to both in dimensions. Engines range from 1.6 litre upto 2.5 litre petrol and diesel. Steep depreciation and generous equipment makes them a good second hand buy. They are being discontinued sometime next year, not sure when a replacement is on the way though.

Currently have a Volvo S80 2.0 Turbo Manual

    Cruise Control,heated seats usual extras

Very comfortable and very fast 180 bhp Standard!

They giveive trouble with Throttle body (pre 02) and Turbo control valve...If cruise control doesn't work its 'usually' a clutch position sensor above the clutch pedal. Alarm warning on dash is usually a internal battery replacement ( above right wheel arch)

MPG is about 32 motorway and 27 ish around town........But drive it hard and trust me you will see the needle drop very fast!

Put in €20 at 159.9 one day and managed 40 miles after fast driving  So be prepared to spend a few quid on fuel.

Seem to be reliable enough :D

    I've a 2.0 petrol S40 Low Pressure Turbo (160bhp) model - 1999.

Had to clean the throttle body & idle control valve (with carburetor cleaner) at one stage as it was dirty and causing rough-idle problems. Apart from that, it has served me well.

MPG range is around 28-35 depending on usage. It gets to 100km/h in just over 8 seconds.

The new model S60 is a beauty, would love a diesel one of those.

A lot of the S80s I saw online were 2.5 litre; are they all turbocharged? I looked up some specs online and twin turbos were mentioned, but I don't know if this translates into Paddy spec.

Edit: I'm not really interested in diesel.

I think all the 2.5's are the (turbocharged) T5 engine, what age range are you looking at?

Yup most of the 2.0 + are LPT or Turbo!

Only problem with mine is hesitation while accelerating.....Checked everything and computer shows no faults so maybe its just turbo lag but its very annoying! Had this problem with other S80 / S60 but never solved it!

Also a trick.....the S80 has a strut bar with a top engine mount...remove strut bar and place fairly thick washers between the strut and shock mount!

Stops a lot of the engine kickback and helps stiffen it slightly (Bar your engine mount is good)

You should check the spark plugs if its hesitation at low revs especially. Idle Control Valve can also cause hesitation, its a simple job to open it up and give it a clean with carb cleaner.

Won't be a new one. Right now it would be '07 upwards, but I probably won't buy anything until after Christmas, when I see how much income I have left after the budget. Won't be spending more than €15k in any case.

If all the 2.5s are turbos, then an S40 would be seriously quick I'm thinking.

Yep, you're looking at 0-60 in 6.6 secs, top speed 149 mph, 226 bhp
