Some sort of receipt from the seller.

You just pre-arrange a time with your insurance company for the cover to switch to the new car.

    Tax on the car.

That's a wise thing to have, but it's not a requirement.

It helps if you get stopped and have no tax though :)

OP as someone else said you can transfer your insurance for a certain time/date

Or if you buy while your insurance company are open, just ring them once you've decided it's for you and they will do it there and then.

I think this might be dependent on the Insurance company. I asked AXA today if I could transfer insurance to the car before I buy it and use this as test drive cover and they said no, that they don't provide any kind of cover for test driving. They suggested having the buyer add me to their policy for the test drive then they would transfer when I bought it!

I was talking about having decided to buy it, so it's "yours" so to speak.

I think on my policy I've open drive which covers me to drive other people's cars, would that work?

I assumed the "driving other cars" extension would be fine but according to AXA at least they don't cover test driving with that even. Would be very hard for them to prove you weren't just driving a friends car though..

Yeah it's a bizarre exclusion imo, it's not as if open drive has any restrictions on the type of car.

I'm insured with Axa hence the interest.

That only confirms what was said it the other "no insurance thread", that sometimes it's really hard or nearly impossible not to drive without insurance.
You either test drive uninsured or not test drive at all.

Or get the seller to add you temporarily.

It's only a phone call in fairness

I'm sure Axa were ok with me test driving my last car with my insurance.

It's only phonecall assuming they will be happy to add someone temporarily.
Provided they don't allow anyone to use third party extension neither to swap cover temporarily for the purposes of test drive, why would they want to add as extra drive on seller policy for the purposes of test drive?

It's done all the time for different reasons, visitors, someone needing to borrow a car etc.

I just checked my insurance and it states that my cover includes my own car, and "any motor car being driven with the consent of the owner, by the insured, provided such vehicle does not belong to him/her and is not hired to him/her under a hire purchase agreement"

That says to me that my policy covers me to test drive insured on my own policy, it doesn't call out any exclusions at all.

    is that safe ?
would you have to confirm that the seller has actually done this

Yes you'd have to confirm it, I would if my insurance wasn't as it is.
