Hi, just about to complete the sale on my first home, previous owner is with electric Ireland for electricity & gas. I have been given both account numbers & I am now going to take a reading of both gas / electricity meters. Just wondering are there better/ cheaper suppliers for electricity / gas? Should i Stay with Electric Ireland? Would I incur any fees if i was to choose a new supplier? Thanks!!

    There's no fees to change

Who is cheapest depends entirely on usage, as nearly every price plan has a different standing charge so there are some that are cheaper for low users and some that are cheaper for high users.

Bord Gais now try and tie you to a surreal payment plan in return for the lower tariffs.

bonkers.ie is the only decent comparison site I know of but its hard to compare without some bills to go from.

Bord Gais seem to have the best value for low usage IMHO

the previous owner of my property had her gas and electricity with Bord Gais.

After ringing Bord Gais and Electric Ireland, i left my gas with Bord Gais and changed my electricity over to Electric Ireland.

had to pay a €300 security deposit on each account. My new blinds will have to wait til after xmas :(

Sorry to bring up an old thread but didn't want to start a new one. Has anyone had any recent experience on this?

I have a new build which is ready for gas and electricity. I currently live abroad and intend to rent the house out when it is finished. Am I better off keeping the electricity and gas with the same supplier?

Is it possible to set up an account for the electricity and then add the gas later as I currently have the mprn for the electricity but don't have the gprn for the gas?

Go with whoever is cheapest. This depends on usage, as some offer different rates and standing charges. I would personally avoid Airtricity, as I found customer service to be non-existnant. The bill estimates were always wrong(never had an issue with a provider before), they didnt bill me for 4 months once and expected a €2k bill to be paid pretty immediately. You cant even pay a bill over the phone 24/7.

If you are renting the house. Put the bills into the tenants name and let them decide. Otherwise you are liable for the bills should they move out.
