Oil or Gas for home?

    Hi,

I am moving into a house soon that currently has an oil burning boiler. The Bord Gais line runs by the house so it won't be a problem to get connected for gas.

Has anyone experienced both fuel types and worked out which fuel type is more economical/easiest to run?

For convenience, presumably gas would be better as there is no issue in terms of filling tanks or worrying about tanks being tampered with.

I am going to upgrade the boiler and the heating controls if I stick with oil so will be incurring costs regardless. I am also planning to insulate the attic and cavity blocks of the house.

Natural gas will win by a mile. Fuel is cheaper, servicing will be cheaper and a gas boiler modulates so will be far more efficient to run.

Natural gas does have a bit more going for it over oil.

    Just some things to consider.
Oil boiler life spans are longer.
Parts for gas boilers are more expensive and in some cases can take longer to get.
Oil burner parts are off the shelf in most plumbing and hardwares suppliers.

You can get a gas boiler so called service for 50 euros or less but it is not proper service. A proper gas boiler service will take longer than a proper oil boiler service.

You will also have to consider how old your pipe work is in your house. For most new gas boiler are very delicate to getting clogged. Even after a good flush and clean of pipe work.
A bit more work in keeping a gas boiler maintained correctly.

Just do a bit more home work on your heating system how clean it is before you do decide.

If it is good and clean you will have no problems with a new gas boiler.

    much prefer gas.

i can figure why oil boilers are so expensive when compared to gas.

hell of alot of components in gas, oil is basicly folded mild steel and stainless welded up. youd think the burner would be the most expensive part but there 300 ish, firebird / grant etc would get them cheaper. i cant figure where the cost goes

    Get the gas.

If you have oil, it is was too stealable (if that is a word).

At nearly €1 per litre you have a massive amount of money sitting in your garden only protected by a thin plastic container. Not only that, if someone steals your oil they won't be too worried about spilling it or letting the bit they don't want drain into your soil. Cleaning up after an oil spill is messy and expensive.
