We're moving house and expanding the family a bit :p

Need to get a second car.

Will do less than 5,000 miles a year.

    Must have four doors.

    Reliability is a priority.

I would like something that's good to drive.

Resale value is no big deal - we'll drive the wheels off it.

Hatchback preferred. Also 'something interesting' preferred.

    Not pushed about age/mileage.

    What would you get ?

If driving less than 5k miles a year, then get a petrol. Huge value to be had - as every Tom, Dick and Harry wants a diesel.

Pity you say "hatchback preferred", as there's insane value on "interesting" saloons out there. BMW, Merc etc. The choice is more limited to hatchbacks though. You could buy an Almera h/b, Astra h/b etc., but they'd hardly be classed as interesting.

You could always buy something like this but personally I'd go for a 3 series petrol saloon. Or a Volvo S60 petrol. Or, the now giveaway Saab 9-3 petrols (just name your price); as everyone thinks you can't get parts (you can!)

Lovely looking motor but what about reliability being a priority?

Feck I missed that, boot is still reasonable on them although the opening is a little small. A little overpriced too so maybe not suited but a nice car for the money all the same.

Tis' it's 20% over budget, nice looking car though :)

Very little info in the ad, always makes me suspicious :)

OP will you need to fit 2-3 carseats?

If you need to fit 3 that will limit your choices (just relating to your post saying expanding the family a bit)

cheap to buy family car for low miles? I'd have a turbo Subaru estate.

My parents have a lovely 01 ML270 AMG for sale for €5k, it only has 95k miles on it - full cream leather, massive boot (someone told me that it will take two more seats to make it a 7 seater)

With a hatchback being preferred, I'd personally go for a mk5 golf. Great car to drive, luxurious interior and super reliability.

Hold there value very well too

Have you ever been in a base model MK 5? It's a joke quite how **** they are.

Reliability on VW's in general is questionable too.

Great car - but you can get them cheaper than that. I picked up a 2004 model last week for €2750.

I'd second that but not that particular example. €4k for a 6 that is 9 years old in just over a months time, is dreamer land.

2007 example here for €5k with a long NCT:

I wouldn't quite call them ****e to be honest, pretty much everything you need is there + more. It's a concise interior with very little riff-raff. Currently have an 07 mk5 and it has all the mod cons with the exception of cruise, Had an 08 Leon before that and as pretty as it was, I quite disliked the interior on it. Reliability wise, yea you could prob do better alright, that said; VW are pretty good though (just expensive when stuff goes, same as the leon)

How about a Honda Civic? in budget, hatchback, reliable.

(the reason I went from an 08 leon to an 07 golf is because the sister wrote off the leon :( women drivers )

The seats in the Volvo S60 are some of the best around, you couldn't compare them to a golf.
I'd look at the 6 and the 60

If it didn't have to be a hatchback:

Very well spec'd 2L Petrol Accord for under 5k.
